Well the Kingston buses have surely improved. I had not been to Kingston in a couple of decades. MUCH nicer.
Norman Manley is bigger and better. I usually fly into Montego Bay.
Both airports are well organized and the baggage handling in Montego Bay is the most efficient I have ever seen. When I flew in
2 1/2 years ago, by the time we cleared immigration, even though the flight was full, all the luggage had been unloaded from the carousel. It took only 2 guys to do it. I was impressed.
Devon House ice cream is now available in many places.
Glad that other than a few new office buildings, the place is recognizable. It would take me a bit to get my bearings in Kingston. I never noticed before that the Port Royal Road went all the way into Kingston. Mountainview Ave seemed smaller than I remember. So much for memories. The homes in Harbourview have been kept up nicely.
I was so pleased to see the children in their school uniforms. I am a big fan of uniforms. Also, it is great to see everyone in their Sunday best for church. Unlike many churches in Canada where even the parson wears jeans and sandals.
Improvements are still needed in many roads thoughout the island. I found some Kingston streets still got flooded. In fact, it's worse than I remember. Junction Road is still
Sidewalks in the small towns are challenging to navigate.
One branch of my family originates from one of the most remote parts of the island. Last time I went, we had to park the car at the shoppe and walk way up to the original family homestead. Well the family on both sides of the road has pooled their resources and put in a beautiful smooth road all the way up. This road is better than the road you take to get up there.
Also, the last time I went there was no electricity. Well dem ave electricity, telephone, Internet. The young people were happily sending text messages. No one was barefoot. Everyone is looking well fed and dressed nicely. Still think their farming clothes are kinda cool.
They are building a new school.
Of course the improvements in the roads along the North coast...well that is no longer news.
All in all much improved.
