It has been revealed that there will be a significant reduction in the amount of money allocated by the National Housing Trust, NHT, to assist low income earners in purchasing homes. The cut in disbursements is for the 2014-2015 period.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller made the disclosure in the House of Representatives yesterday, while responding to questions about the NHT's purchase of the Outameni property. The allocation, which is in the form of grants, is normally made from the NHT's surplus. Some 104 contributors will benefit from $124 million. In the previous year approval was given for 258 contributors to benefit from at $209 million.
Meanwhile, Mrs Simpson Miller said because the assistance is in grants, applicants must meet certain criteria. These include contributing for more than 10 years and earning less than $10,000 per week.
