Another appeal is being made for the Ministry of Agriculture to provide assistance for farmers affected by the drought in St. Elizabeth.
Chairman of the Parish Council, Everton Fisher, says the farming sector from Myersville to Pedro Plains is being impacted by the dry spell.
Fisher believes much more can be done through the Rural Agricultural Development Authority.
Impact on food prices
The drought affecting the parish continues to impact food prices.
A visit to the Santa Cruz and Black River markets on the weekend revealed a steep increase in the prices for some agricultural produce such as carrots, cabbage as well as sweet and Irish potatoes.
Carrots and Irish potato have moved to $200 per pound, while cabbage is being sold for $150 per pound.
Vendors told RJR News the increase is due mainly to the effect of the drought and the prices at which the produce are being sold by farmers.
