World record holder and double Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt heads a list of global stars down to compete at the inaugural Racers Grand Prix to be held at the National Stadium on June 11.
2011 world champion Yohan Blake, 2015 world sprint hurdles champion Danielle Williams, former world record holder Asafa Powell and Hansle Parchment are some of the other local athletes down to compete.
South African world 400 metres champion Wayde van Niekerk, as well as American Lolo Jones and Queen Harrison are some of the overseas athletes who are expected to compete. Racers Track Club head coach Glen Mills explained how the event was conceptualised.
“We have been looking at creative ways to fund the club. Over the years I have put maybe 70 cents from every dollar from my pocket into running the club. We looked at our successes and all of our athletes Usain Bolt, Blake, Weir…..supported the effort of us putting on a meet and they would support it by performing,” said the Racers Track Club President and head coach. Racers Track Clubs’ ace sprinter bolt lauded the idea of his coach.
“It’s brilliant. As I said earlier, it has been a dream of coach Glen Mills for years so for this to become reality now, it’s just wonderful to see his dream come true,” said Bolt.
Television Jamaica is one of the main sponsors of the meet and will have live exclusive coverage of the inaugural staging on June 11.
