Area Two Police Chief Glenford Hudson has described as "very unfortunate" the arrest of a female sergeant based in St Mary. Amoy West, was detained at the Port Maria Police Station over the weekend after allegedly attempting to help her brother evade a gun charge.West's brother, Ian, who is an ex-policeman, was arrested last Saturday and charged after police discovered an illegal M-16 magazine at his house.
His sister and mother were also detained after they went to Port Maria to try and intervene in his arrest. While the police sergeant remains in custody, her mother and brother were released on bail earlier this week. Hudson told The Gleaner that it was a very unfortunate situation, which is being dealt with both at the criminal and departmental level. "We considered there was some form of interference as it was reported by the policewoman, which caused some action to be taken against her."
Hudson noted that the sergeant's arrest supported the notion that no one is above the law and that all crimes, irrespective of the suspects involved, will be investigated.
