One of western Jamaica's respected pediatricians, Dr Carlene Grant-Davis, who works at the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH), was accidentally shot and injured as gunmen traded bullets along the Mount Salem main road in Montego Bay on Tuesday morning.
Dr Grant-Davis, the wife of Homer Davis, a Jamaica Labour Party councillor in the St James Parish Council, was reportedly waiting for a hair salon to be opened when she got hit by a gunman's bullet. An unidentified man, believed to be the target of the shooting, was also killed.
"She is okay. She is in stable condition as I spoke with her and she is consciously responding so she is alright," Councillor Davis told THE STAR.
"My wife received a graze on her right hand and near to her navel, I am thankful that she is alive."

Police reports are that about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the man was walking along the Mount Salem main road, from the direction of Jarrett Park, when unknown assailants approached him.
It is said that the men opened fire at him, and the victim ran and fell near the CRH. It was later discovered that he had multiple gunshot wounds. It was during the incident that Dr Grant-Davis was injured.
The dead man is said to be of Indian descent with brown complexion and is 5ft 10in tall. He was clad in blue jeans, blue shirt, and a black and white sneakers.
The St James police was also kept busy yesterday as they investigated the shooting death of a 17-year-old student of the Spot Valley High School. He was shot and killed in Salt Spring, Montego Bay.
Arando Whittaker of Mission Corner in Salt Spring was in a motor car driving along the main road when gunmen opened fire at him. Reports are that he lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a wall. Whittaker was taken to the CRH where he was pronounced dead
