NEW YORK - Memphis the Musical has been nominated for eight Tony Awards. The announcement was made Tuesday morning in New York City.
Nominations include Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score.
Director Christopher Ashley was named for a Best Direction nomination, Chad Kimball for Best Actor, and Montego Glover for Best Actress.
Memphis was also nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Orchestrations.
Memphis the Musical is the story of radio DJ Daddy O Dewey Phillips, the first DJ to play black music on a white Memphis radio station.
In October 2011, this Broadway hit will come here to Memphis to kick off its national tour.
