WALLED LAKE, Mich. — A 2003 graduate of Michigan’s Walled Lake Central High school graduate is out of the running for Miss USA after resigning as Miss Wisconsin USA over identity fraud charges.
Twenty-six-year-old Shaletta Porterfield won the Wisconsin title last year and would have competed in Las Vegas next month, but instead resigned Friday. She’s pleaded not guilty in Wisconsin to misappropriating identity information to obtain money.
Defense lawyer Robert Nagel says the Madison, Wis., woman acknowledges her mistakes and expects to resolve the charges.
The Oakland Press of Pontiac says Porterfield is a University of Michigan graduate, with parents in West Bloomfield.
Miss Michigan USA Channing Pierce of Royal Oak competes for the national title against a field that now includes the new Wisconsin entrant, Jordan Morkin of Green Bay.
