TORONTO - A 52-year-old woman is dead after being shot in a confrontation with cops in North York Friday morning.
Toronto Police say officers responded to a call for “a person with a knife” at 52 Wedgewood Dr., near Yonge St. and Cummer Ave., around 9:30 a.m.
Few other details about the police shooting were immediately available. However, it's suspected there was some sort of dispute outside the home before officers arrived, possibly between the woman and her mother.
Const. Tony Vella said the province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to probe the incident, so no further comment could be made. The SIU investigates all incidents of serious injury or death involving police officers.
The victim’s name has not been released.
It’s believed the home where the incident occurred has numerous tenants.
The street remains cordoned off with yellow police tape as cops and SIU investigators gather evidence
