THE police are warning members of the public to beware of their relatives who are part of a growing scam in which they conspire with unscrupulous persons to stage false kidnappings in order to con them out of large sums.
During a press conference today, Head of the Organised Crime Investigative Division Senior Superintendent Fitz Bailey said of the 29 cases reported since 2009, six have been false reports and have turned out to be attempts by relatives to extort ransoms from family members.
He also said last year half of the 14 cases reported were not genuine kidnappings.
"Investigations revealed that There have been an increase in the cases of public mischief as it relates to kidnapping and extortion and I want to say that in many instances the person who is purported to have been kidnapped as well as the kidnappers is normally a family members and this is used as a means to extorting money from family members," Bailey said.
Bailey said last year more $300,000 was paid out by victims of false kidnapping plots hatched by family members.
"These fund that were paid out were actually paid out by family members to other family members in the racket," he said.
