Published: Wednesday | June 20, 2012 0 Comments Former police constable Mark Russell, who was extradited to Jamaica last week to face a murder charge, is to appear in the Home Circuit Court today.
Russell fled the island to the United States before the director of public prosecutions ruled that he and former policeman Morris Lee must be charged with the July 2007 murder of 18-year-old Ravin Thompson. Lee has not yet been found.
Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie, who is representing Russell, said yesterday he was going to make an application for bail.
Russell is the third policeman to be extradited to Jamaica to face charges.
In 1976, Detective Sergeant Winston Hawthorn Edam, who was serving his second term as chairman of the Jamaica Police Federation, left the island for the US. He was declared a deserter when he failed to report for duty and it was later discovered that a significant amount of money was missing from the Federation.
He was extradited from the US on August 3, 1982. He was tried in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court and was on October 22, 1982 found guilty of 14 counts of fraud involving $17,936. He was sentenced to 18 months on each charge, with the sentences to run concurrently.
In 1984, Detective Sergeant Calvin George Martin, of the Police Operations Squad, fled the island to the US. He was then facing charges of larceny and receiving four motor cars knowing them to be stolen. He was held in Maryland in January 1987 and extradited to Jamaica on March 5 that year. On August 5, 1987 he was found guilty on three counts of receiving stolen cars and sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to three years' imprisonment on each count. The sentences were to run concurrently.
