Brothers and Sisters,
Congratulations! We've reached our 2012 goal of 2,000 signatures!
And a lot of things are changing. A few weeks ago, I had the honor of speaking with Queen Mother Dr. Delois N. Blakely about the petition to exonerate the Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Along with her blessing, she invoked the memory of the ancestors Queen Mother Moore, Mwalimu Dudley Thompson, and Mwalimu Dr. Julius Nyrere, and instructed me to broaden the scope of our petition.
And this is where you come in. For if there's one thing I've learned from the work of Marcus Garvey, it's that we will have to accomplish this redemptive task for ourselves.
In Queen Mother Blakely’s view, those of us who live in the United States should contact our representatives in the House of Representatives to reintroduce HB 24, which was presented by Representative Charles Rangel to the Congress in January 2007. She also stated that Representative John Conyers would be a worthy ally in our cause.
If you would like to help with contacting other members of the House of Representatives, please send me an email, so that we can coordinate our efforts. I am including my online petition to Representative Frederica Wilson as a template. We'll begin on January 7, 2013. I'll be using Causes.com
Dear Representative Frederica Wilson,
Greetings!
On January 10, 2007, Representative Charles Rangel introduced H. Con. Res. 24 to the 110th Congress: "Expressing the sense of the Congress that the President should grant a pardon to Marcus Mosiah Garvey to clear his name and affirm his innocence of crimes for which he was unjustly prosecuted and convicted."
We, the undersigned members of your constituency, are requesting the assistance of your office and the Congressional Black Caucus in reintroducing the resolution with the following change in the wording: "Expressing the sense of the Congress that the President should exonerate Marcus Mosiah Garvey to clear his name and affirm his innocence of crimes for which he was unjustly prosecuted and convicted."
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Geoffrey Philp
Queen Mother also suggested that signees in all other countries should contact their governmental representatives urging them to join together for the exoneration of the Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. She made a special emphasis in mentioning the Honorable Portia Simpson-Miller and the Honorable Edward Seaga of Jamaica and said they could be extremely helpful in getting the support of CARICOM and African Union members.
Here is a template that could be used for Jamaica:
To:
The Prime Minister of Jamaica and the Parliament of Jamaica
We, the undersigned, request the assistance of the Prime Minister of Jamaica and the Parliament of Jamaica in a petition to the President of the United States of America for the exoneration of Jamaica's First National Hero, the Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
It is now abundantly clear that Garvey did not commit any criminal acts, and as H. Con. Res. 24 , which was introduced by Representative Charles Rangel to the 110th Congress on January 10, 2007 has already established, "Expressing the sense of the Congress that the President should grant a pardon to Marcus Mosiah Garvey to clear his name and affirm his innocence of crimes for which he was unjustly prosecuted and convicted."
We, the undersigned, therefore petition the Prime Minister and the Parliament employ the diplomatic power of Jamaica and other members of the OAS to insure the exoneration of the Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey
We call on the Prime Minister and Parliament to acknowledge this historical injustice, to discharge their moral responsibility, and to make whole the reputation of its First National Hero, the Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
If you would like to volunteer for this online petition or any others to the governments of the UK, Canada, Caribbean, or African Union, please send me an email, so that we can coordinate our efforts. We'll also begin on January 7, 2013.
We will also need help with any Black organizations, fraternities, and sororities that will be willing to assist with the original petition. Let’s start a Marcus Garvey network so that WE can support ALL Garvey efforts!
Over the holidays, as we continue to work toward the exoneration of the Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, please take some time to love and cherish your families because at the heart of our struggle, family is what it’s all about.
Take care of your selves and your loved ones.
One Love,
Geoffrey
