Olympic 100 and 200 metres sprint champion Usain Bolt began his 2013 season on a moderate note yesterday with a 46.71 clocking over 400 metres at the Camperdown Classic track and field meet at the National Stadium.
Bolt took things easy throughout then admitted he felt nervous on the blocks.
"I was a bit nervous at the start, but I felt good during the race and I am not worried about time as I am very happy that I was able to complete the race and win it. It was also good to get in my first run of the season ... this is a confidence booster for me," added Bolt.
Bolt won heat two of the time finals ahead of another national representative, Allodin Fothergill who clocked 46.82.
superior strength
Olympic 200 metres bronze medallist Warren Weir clocked the fastest time, 46.21, in winning a competitive heat three. Displaying superior strength in the final 50 metres, Weir got the better of Racers Track Club teammates Edino Steele (46.64) and Olympic 200m silver medallist, Yohan Blake who was third in 46.77.
Weir was delighted with his run.
" I am happy with the win and time as this shows that my strength training is up there and I am looking forward to the remainder of the season," said Weir.
Blake was also pleased.
"Although I started training a bit later than usual it was good to come out and compete in the race and I am looking forward to the remainder of the season," Blake
The feature event among high schools, the 4x100 metres relay for Class One saw Vere Technical and Calabar High coming out on top to pocket the top prize of $60,000. Vere, with a quartet which included Olivia James and Shericka Jackson, captured the girls' event in 45.76 seconds to get the better of St Jago High (46.60) and St. Andrew High, 46.68.
Calabar cruised to victory stopping the clock at 40.86 seconds. Jamaica College were second in 41.72 and Kingston College third in 41.76.
