For it’s sixth edition, the Montreal International Reggae Festival has recruited a fresh, new team including experienced contributors with a wealth of expertise. As a result, this year’s program has been carefully crafted to showcase a variety of reggae genres that will appeal to a range of audiences. This includes 60s era rocksteady all the way to modern new roots.

That said, the kick-off on Friday night will be legendary Jamaican Sound System Stur-Gav featuring original members from the late 70s : DJ U-Roy (pioneer of the genre), Josey Wales, Charlie Chaplin and Brigadier Gerry. It will be a musical journey back to the early days of roots and dancehall pictured by intense jam sessions presided by the most seasoned selector (reggae DJ) unleashing a barrage of “riddims” to which 4 DJs (singers) successively answer with sharp, improvised lyrics…now that’s four the hard way!

Saturday night will see the coming together of dancehall and new roots fans. While still a member of the group, Onyan has also been pursuing a solo career.
