Buju Banton Lyrics Causing Concert Controversy

Jamaican artists Buju Banton and Beanie have received international acclaim for their reggae dance hall music. But at least one group in South Florida says some of Banton's lyrics are inflammatory enough that the city of Miami should cancel Banton's upcoming concert at the James L. Knight Center.

"These lyrics call for the violent murder and mutilation and pouring acid on gay people. They call for getting a rope and hanging lesbians. These lyrics are really out of control," said Stratton Pollitzer of Equality Florida.

Pollitzer said he has successfully talked some advertisers to pull out and has had other concerts canceled.

Diaspora in Miami defends Buju Banton, Beenie Man

A GROUP of Jamaicans in Miami have launched a petition to allow deejays Buju Banton and Beenie Man to appear on the October 31 Reggae Bash show in that Florida city.

The group has sent a letter to Miami mayor, Manuel Diaz, and Carlos Alvarez, mayor of Miami/Dade County, asking for their support. The show is scheduled for the James L. Knight Center.

Equality Florida, a gay rights group, told the Miami Herald that Banton has a history of abusing homosexuals. It pointed to his infamous 1992 anti-gay song, Boom Bye Bye, as evidence.

Forgotten matter

But Andrew Minott of Global Vybz Entertainment, promoters of the show, countered by saying the song was done almost 20 years ago and that Banton no longer performs it at concerts.

&quot;The song was forgotten about. <span style="font-weight: bold">Because they are making it a big issue it's come to the forefront</span>. Let sleeping dogs lie,&quot; Minott said.

According to the Miami Herald, <span style="font-weight: bold">the car dealership, Toyota of Hollywood</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold">has ordered three of its salesmen to withdraw support for the concert.</span>

Several calls by The Gleaner to Banton's manager, Tracii McGregor, were not returned.

Equality Florida is the latest gay organisation in the United States to challenge Banton's American tour, which is in support of his Rasta Got Soul album.

In August, promoters Live Nation and AEG cancelled dates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, Las Vegas, Dallas and Houston, following robust protests by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.

Backlash forcing hand

The gay backlash has forced the singjay's management to reschedule shows in other major cities such as Salt Lake City, Utah, Richmond, Virginia and Columbus, Ohio.

Banton and other dancehall acts, including Sizzla and Capleton, have been dogged by gay activists in the United States and Europe for several years. In 2007, gay rights groups drafted the Reggae Compassionate Act, which called for dancehall acts to show more tolerance towards homosexuals.

Banton has denied signing it, but the Miami Herald published a section of the document with the signature Mark Myrie (Banton's real name) affixed to it.

This story by the Gleaner is funny. They mention a &quot;group&quot; of Jamaicans. Who is this group. I don't think there is any &quot;teeth in this group&quot;. As far as I know none of the diaspora leaders in the community has come out backing Buju publicly. So why no &quot;backative&quot;. I believe there is no wiggle room to defend the song until Buju Banton and his management takes the lead. The bottomline is the song speaks for itself. The words are clear. I have heard so many stories from people who are supposed insiders

- Buju friend was raped so the song was dedicated to him
- Record promotor said he had to do that song because it was the trend
- Teenage mistake
- Was written for someone else and he just voiced it to test the song.

Pick a story and stick to it. I personally can't defend a changing story. I would look like an idiot.

That is a joke .
They elect leaders on the basis of popularity and connectedness.
Instead of effectiveness,and drive.

that is a sure recipe for a failed project.

They elected these people without no system to assist them to get the program going and just sit and wait to see it going.

Dr Dudd...It is ironic you say this...I have been asked to explore the possibilites...I have been very skeptically for years of politics and politrixs...I am simple person who hate when we complicate things...I am not totally PC...lets see where it goes...

Back to regular scheduled programming...I had a lunch with a friend today and the Buju thing came up. She never saw the lyrics before. After seeing it she said it was &quot;indefensible&quot; and that on a big platform you need big guns...

Well the first rule is that you don't have to be a politician to be a nation builder.

Next one is that it does not matter how quiet you are, when an idea is ready to materialize, it may simply chose you.

You see those who have been at the forefront of great movements, never aspire,and in most cases tried to avoid it.
remember the stuttering Moses? well his complaint that he had speech impediment did not save him.

I was involved with the first roll out of the Internet.
And have been involved on 2 Jamaican boards prior to this one. remember Jamaica On Line?

We did a lot with it in the early days. It does not take a lot to contact and maintain an membership.

You never have to be involved in politics. But all you have to do is to expect others to be involved.

the important thing is to keep the organization going. It is like running a business.
there will be areas where you would rather not have to be bothered with, but you have to keep it going.
The Important thing is ti get it off the ground.
since the politicians will be attracted as soon as it is up and running. If the few who have the ability don't do it, do you think that the politicians at heart will?
don't let politics hinder you from contribution. And one more thing, only quiet people get things done. Others
talk,and complain.
it is the quiet ones that do things.

As for the person who stated that the subject of the song wass indefensible? I would ask her what was she doing at age 15.

Dr Dudd thanks for the great advice. I was actively involved with a few board (Jamaican and non Jamaican) as president a few times. I am doer and &quot;system builder&quot; so when politics I try to stay far away. Some say play the game...I can for a little bit but not when it gets in the way of progress. Like you said these things seem to find me...Thanks again...

Good question...we really do some silly things as teenagers. Seem like you could help them right the defense for Buju as he clearly need some assist to frame the discussion.
