Hi, vannie. my general opinion is that Dan Brown sure knows how to meld religious mysticism with science in a way that intrigues the reader. however, as wallie said one time (about da vinci code), his mysteries aren't really that mysterious. in this case, i had a feeling about the villain, and yup, before the big reveal, had figured out the big secret. <span style="font-style: italic">*writing so as not to spoil it for others*</span>

okay, some more thoughts.

the book to me is a bit of an apologia for freemasonry. brown is careful to maintain an appearance of dispassion by making his hero officially a skeptic. but the positive association with George Washington and the builders of the American capital, the linking of the freemason-oriented ideals of knowledge and power employed in the building of a great society seemed to me an attempt to help rescue the brotherhood from the suspicion and distrust that it has long generated.

the little bit of logician in me loved the puzzles in the book, and really, it was more that than the action that entertained me the most.

i was glad there was no real attempt at creating a love story - didnt that kind of happen in the da vinci code? tell the truth, i wondered at the start of this book whether mary great grand pickney was going to show up going thru some horrible divorce with richard langdon as a way of freeing up to go chase the sexy scientist.

i admit to being intrigued by the science of measuring the weight of the human body before and after death as a way of proving the existence of the soul. why this proof was important i'm still unsure about, and to me that is a failing of the novel. there are a bunch of ideas introduced that are interesting in and of themselves but how this contributes to strengthening the storyline - well, i was less than impressed. maybe mi naw memba it well.

i do like that Dan Brown tries to address metaphysical issues in his book, the attempt by human beings to reach transcendence whether thru science or religion. for that reason mi wi always buy im book dem. but i think, so far, angels and demons is my favorite of his works because it more perfectly married action, science and religionl.

arite, mi done mi pontification. wat do u think about the book?

that's okay babes. at the very least mi did suspect that round bout now would have been a tough time for u. whenever u ready we can pick up the discussion or even move on to another one (mi no really have more fi seh bout dan brown anyway).

okay i finished my copy in one sitting - well i paused to eat - and then gobbled the rest of the book up

i didn't guess the sinister ending - never crossed my mind

i liked it better than the da vinci code - more straightforward, fast paced (but no one could escape all those scenarios - in the knick of time - but it was interesting to see how the author played it)

i like the puzzles but my latin is bad now - and my greek is non-existant - like the parallel to modern day sudoki (sp)

and the mind/body experiments that set you thinking - the one about the soul was interesting but it was interesting to read about all the early scientists that were on to this stuff - while we just begin to explore it again

reading about the freemasons and the symbols in DC was interesting - i worked out of DC for 2 years and could see the Washington Monument from my hotel room - although i couldn't see any inscription - the top always fascinated me with it's blinking red lights (air traffic) that have a couple of different patterns

in my minds eyes i can already see tom hanks rushing around the city

the whole book was placed within a 10 hour period

i just re-gifted it to a coworker i read it so fast it looks new
