an interesting side note...

Kool Herc who has been dubbed "the father of hip hop" was a Jamaican who immigrated from Kingston to the Bronx in 1967. His knowledge of the soundsystem scene in JA is said to have had significant influence on the growing hip hop movement of the early 70's.

toasting, "break beat when the DJ would extend the song by playing doubles of the song, flipping back and forth so the MC could toast out the crowd...Herc was definitely a father...

Hip Hop, to the people who I would call the true heads, denotes a culture, of which music is an integral part (which includes rap), but as napi and others pointed out has turntabling, or just being a good DJ, being an MC- meaning you can spit rhymes, graff, and dancing...

It's not an easy division unless you look at it through the eyes of the culture, in which case Nelly would not be hip hop.

For example, if I wanted to pull b-boys to the floor, I would never consider playing Hot in Herr.

I would play Big Apple Rappin, or some BDP, some Black Star...

there is a lot of crossover, but as people noted, and in my opinion as well, definitions are best developed from inside the cultures who live them, the tools of the culture have come to refer to other things...I think the definitions are usually intuitively understood...eventually anyway.

I wish Black Star would come back together...

Monk, I heard that was in the works, but of course, that was a while ago.

I still haven't gotten Mos's new album, but I hear it's REALLY experimental. But I do love me some Mos, so I may have to get it anyway.

Have you heard the new Common? (I must admit I have the 'leaked' bootleg, but I fully intend to go and buy the CD when it drops)? How's that being received up there?

I agree with this thing.

But ladytiger is right too in a way. Cuz nowadays even songs that are closer to R&B are considered hip hop. Even if say 10 years ago they wouldn't have been considered like that. Now, almost every R&B and rap song is hip hop. People don't even realise the difference between them. It's just become such a mess. We should go back to the times when R&B was R&B and rap was rap and not mix them up and put them in the same bowl.
If this thing goes on, we'll end up saying that rock is hip hop too [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]
