it's a very wise thing that Brookmyre is print only. I'd have a tough time deciphering the scottish accent from books on tape.

QK - they didn't have dorsey at the library, so i've requested two of them to be sent there from another branch. thanks again for the tip.

i read the first Tim Dorsey, Florida Roadkill. Here's my opinion:

He's a good writer, in the Carl Hiaassen genre of outrageous characters and killings around a Florida environmental theme. (In fact him pay homage to Hiaassen inna di book).

HOWEVER - mi cannot tek di body count. too much casual killing man, despite the ingenious ways in which folks are slain (suffocation from wet jeans...[img]/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img] ).

also, mi had to adjust too much to the idea of there being an anti-hero, the bad guy is sort of the good guy, and he is featured in ALL of Dorsey's books. he wasn't sympathetic enough a character for me to excuse his criminality in favour of his being on the right side of other wusser bad guys.

BUT, some of the characters are very memorable. still recalling the blonde cocaine addict pulling a huge "coke booger" out of her nose then deciding to stuff it back in cause there was still some usable cocaine in it...[img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]

if he comes with a book that features a new hero, i might give Dorsey another try.

I bought SandiF's recommendations: Allan Folsom's The Exile and Greg Iles' Mortal Fear.

Started out reading Mortal Fear, wasn't too keen and switched midway to The Exile.

Flippin heck, The Exile was a waste of good money! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70394-bawlout.gif[/img] ugh! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70400-talktohand.gif[/img] The story's about a young detective who makes an elite corrupted squad and a serial killer with a mission.

The writing was sorry, the characters were boring and the plot was so over explained it just pizzed me off!!!!

My recommendation: Don't buy it... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70400-talktohand.gif[/img]

I had to finish it (cause I did purchase it after all [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]) and was only too glad when I was finally able to put it down and pick up where I left off reading Mortal Fear... and whoa... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img] it's good!!!! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]

This story is told from the view point of a commodities trader who's also a sysop for a sexually explicit online service. When the female members of this service began disappearing and then turning up brutally murdered, he finds himself a prime suspect.

He hatches a plan with his brilliant friend to trap the killer who seems untrappable. In the meantime, he's dealing with family issues that could destroy his life.

My recommendation: If you like edge of your seat suspense, tough it out through the first few chapters, it will deliver! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]

Nunya, I've only read two of this author"s books years ago but I would still recommend them. The first one is Bella Mafia by Lynda La Plante. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70371-jump.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70371-jump.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70371-jump.gif[/img] Oh my I couldn't put this book down, they tried to make a movie based on the book but it didn't do justice. If you read this I'm sure you'll love it. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]

The other book is called Entwined, [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70402-thinking.gif[/img] I can't remember the whole story and I think I read this book first. I remember it being really good and that's what lead me to read Bella Mafia. just to refresh, try:

1. One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night, by Christopher Brookmyre. Avoid any of the books that has the journalist Jack Parlabane, they're not as satisfying.

2. Any novel by Ian Rankin, with his star Inspector Rebus.

3. Hard Times or any early Sara Paretsky.

4. Anything by Elizabeth George - just be prepared to skip past the personal romance bits of the hero Inspector Lynley

Mi surprise you did not like The Exile. If you so desire to try any of Folsom's books you will find his trend to be mid-age bachelor on some high-rise-capade.

Glad you enjoyed Mortal Fear. I've been reading Greg Iles books and he's by far one of the best fictional authors around. He writes in different genres... stories based during the civil rights period in the South, artificial intelligence, nazi Germany, stories dealing with incest. Do try his other books, especially The Quiet Game -- so far, that's the best Greg Iles book I've read.

Btw, do try Walter Mosley's "Always Outnumbered; Always Outgunned". Excellent, light easy read about Socrates Fortlow.

Quiet Game is an excellent read. 24 Hour was very good... chilling. Mi nuh have no books to read right now, so mi will contend with people staring on the public commute this week.

Will look up those books from mountain at the library.

Mi come back home from wey day... trip went way too quick, and mi not acclimated yet to US way of life. Check out non-JA trip and photo forum.

A Dangerous Road (A Smokey Dalton Novel) (Paperback)
by Kris Nelscott

this is his first book which won the mystery award..he has several others in the same vein....ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS READ...

this first one is set in Memphis during the assassination of MLK who is a childhood friend of the main character....the book is sooooooooooooooooo engrossing because it delves with black history sort of ...i.e. the scenarios etc r contemporary

i just discovered this author and have alllllll his books on my living room floor as i am reading them one after the other

I just got through reading With No One As Witness - Elizabeth George. Why'd it take me so long?

Well.

As I noted (prolly many moons ago [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]), I was pretty excited about reading it, especially because of the glowing review that mtng gave...

And so I dove in with great enthusiasm. Until I got to the part where Helen was in a quandary [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img] about the baby's christening outfit [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

Aright, I took mtng's admonishion (sp) to heart, and tried to overlook the whole personal aspect's of our lovely hero's life...

And I was succeeding too, til I got to the part where the lovely hero's wife talked about 'going for walkies'

What the blank is 'walkies'????

I am sorry, but the phrase set my teeth so much on edge, that I tossed my newly purchased book across the room and narrowly missed *****ing David in the head... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

I read two other books that were not on the list and even re-read some other book before giving this one a second chance...

It took me a while to finish... and I have to say that that one phrase by the woman, made me very unsympathetic when she died...

Ugh.

Regarding Lynley's fellow officers: The female (was she an inspector? - mi cyaa memba har name) I liked her until she ate the noodle from the plate of the naasy street bwoy. Afta dat, she jus sick mi stomach. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70400-talktohand.gif[/img]

Winston: I liked him. Especially when he made his feelings known to the single mom and how he handle the power-mad new commissioner (was it commissioner?)

The ending (of the serial killer) was terribly dissappointing... I mean, really... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]

Anyway, the story was ok. I would buy another of George's books and have even gone so far as to check out what else she's got out there. Only thing is, the ones I saw featured a living Helen... *shudder* so I'll hold off til I find one with out...
