Chomsky is also #6 on the list of most quoted people and yes, I believe that by those who voted for Chomsky as the leading intellectual were also sought out by the pollsters because they were recognized as intellectuals. Sort of like the logic of having the Oscar winners being decided by movie people.
I am assuming he gained the top spot because of his many books, speeches, debates etc on political matters, his unassailability on such matters and his recognition as sort of an Einstein in the theories of linguistics.
What's good about being on the Chomsky left is that those of us who do cite or quote him need have no fear of serious contradiction.
