I wasn't surprised that Andrea Levy did not spend much time in JA. It shows a little. But to say that the characters are in-authentic I think is going too far. I agree that Hortense is "overdone", because no matter what she was expecting, the reality should have dawned on her much sooner. And here we are x-amount of days into her England stay and she still act like "is so the English people stay?".
Gilbert and the rest of them I think are very authentic. And you have to consider that this is almost 60 years ago so you have to take an adjustment for that time period.
As far as Michael and the teacher... I think the author had to establish Michael as a ladie's man in order for his actions later on to make sense. (not to give anything away to those who haven't read yet)
To tell you the truth, the whole part about Bernard is pathetic and I admit that I speed-read that part.
