Re: "Small Island" book discussion
I read this book a while age and can't remember who exactly said this (I believe it was Gilbert) who likened England to a mother who was far off, but one he knew intimately, knew her borders and shores, who sent him gifts from afar, but when he reached her shores he was crushed because she did not know him - that was profound to me.
I have lived with "Hortense and Gilbert" (my in-laws) for the past twenty years or so, so I was able to relate to those characters!
Is this forum for book club members only, and if so, how can I become a member?
