Some examples? Well I got to say I don't really check the new artistes too much because what I tend to hear of the newer stuff turns me off. Much of the newer things I hear is too sexually charged and self-centered for my tastes. The best artiste are able to write love songs in a classy way and also have a consciousness which is also included in their writing. Check Curtis Mayfield's final album "Brand New Day" for what I think is among the best of contemporary soul music.

yeah R&B is almost as dead as hip hop. it's just Pop in black face rather than the soul that it used to be. I think of Beres Hammond's song Rockaway and how you can't write a song like that about today's "artists" they are just manufactured spokesmen and women these days. there ARE exceptions as was said but dammit if those ever get air play.

If you're looking for R&B artists on the mainstream airwaves, you're not likely to find any/many, not like you're speaking of. Mainstream=pop, even in R&B, and it's all about what sells.

There was an artist out a few years back, Davina, she was pretty good. Only one album that I know of, though. I can't think of too many others in current R&B. If I do, I'll post them. </span>

Yeah, I understand what you say about Teddy and Marvin and so forth. But let me put it this way- I much prefer "Let's Get It On" to "Sexual Healing". That song cross the line of good taste for me. Really I prefer Toots & The Maytals song in response "SPIRITUAL Healing" [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70409-waytogo.gif[/img] But for me "Sexual Healing" is too explicit and it seems the next generation push even further in that direction. (Like Prince for example) When you listen to a "today's R&B" station how often do you hear something new of the quality and decency of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together"? Do you see what I'm getting at? Some may disagree, but I think a song can be big people music and also something you don't have to cover the children ears when it's on. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif[/img] Since that line was crossed it's only gone down further and further in the lyrics- TV and movies too.

I haven't bought anything modern in a long time... I usually buy old stuff - compilations... the last CD I bought was a replacement Anita Baker 'Giving You the Best That I Got'(bout a month ago) and another 'Best Of' Teddy Pendergast...

Comfortable in what sense? I have seen her performing and I don't see her being uncomfortable at all. What I do see is that she is proud of who she is, I also see her as a humbled performer as well. India"s lyrics have more meaning to me than Alica"s.

You can find them both online and record stores. I usually buy my music at http://www.Amazon.com they have many compilations there. My friend just last week bought 3 CD's in a package at Target's last week for $9.99 I think. A good music store will have these you just have to look.
