From what she said, the lesbian rumors started shortly after she exploded on the scene projecting a 'rough look'. If she had to do it all over again, she wouldn't have done it that way.

As for the relationship being a "secret", that more has to do with the fact that they have been able to keep a rather low profile and avoid being fodder for the media / tabloids.
