The Bible is quite clear on that one; go back and read the text you cited which clearly states: "And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also."

By spilling his seed, Onan was trying to avoid his responsibility (producing a heir for/with his wife) which was a part of laws governing the day and was punished accordingly.

That is not the question I was asking, My question Is that God showed his displeasure with Onan for Coitus interruptus but did not punish Judah for having sex with Tamar to whom he was not married.....Nor did God Punish Tamar for playing the Harlot/whore (temple prostitute).

Good question and Tamar's story has more to it than meets the eye. Can't get into it right now as I am prepping for a class, but will revisit this asap.

People focus a lot on the "spilling of seed". Since there is no other mention of this as prohibited by scripture isn't it this that displeased the Lord.

I can't quote the whole of Genesis 8 here but clearly this was a set of sexually screwed up people and God was not pleased with thier behaviour. Sexual sin has serious consequences and it is one of the reasons Jamaica and so many Jamaican families are in such a mess. The fallout can be grisly and gruesome.

This type of filthy behaviour is contrary to scripture and the sooner we repent of it as a nation and stop winking at sin, the sooner we will prosper.

Exodus 20:5, Numbers 14:18 and Proverbs 14:34 are instructive in this regard.

Of course, this type of behaviour is not unique to our community. I have been speaking with people from the UK, China and Vietnam and they also have their issues. My Vietnamese manicurist told me of her friend who was married to a man, also from Vietnam. The couple had children. The husband would take many trips to Vietnam. The couple bought a house and rented it out. Eventually, she learned that:

- the husband had been having an affair with a Chinese girl in Vietnam
- brought her to Canada and SHE was the tenant in the couple's house
- he had continued the affair
- the Chinese woman got pregnant

She gave her husband an ultimatum, me or the Chinese woman. He stuck with the wife and the Chinese woman was kicked out of the house she was renting. Don't know how the wife put up with it. I would have kicked him to the curb.

Re: Tamar and Judah, this is an interesting perspective. She was guilty of "playing the harlot". He was guilty of cavorting with prostitutes:

Judah was down to one son left and he couldn't help noticing that the other two died shortly after marrying Tamar. Using the fact that Shelah was technically too young for marriage, he told Tamar to return to her father's house until Shelah was old enough. But out of sight, out of mind, and Judah conveniently forgot to send for Tamar over the years.Tamar got it into her head to have a child one way or another. What she did was not right. It is noted that by this time Judah's wife had died (Genesis 38:12). We aren't told why she pick this particular location, but I suspect that she heard rumors that Judah was seeing prostitutes. I conclude this because she seem confident that he would visit her. She dressed up as a prostitute and then waited for Judah. Judah didn't have payment with him, so Tamar insisted on his signature seal and staff to be held until payment arrived. Judah sent the payment with a friend, but by that time Tamar had disappeared and no one in the area knew of a prostitute working in that area. Take note of what Judah said, "Then Judah said, "Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her"" (Genesis 38:23). Judah knew that what he did was wrong. He didn't want to make a big deal looking for the prostitute just to pay her and get his seal and staff back. Like many sinners, he didn't want his sin to be public knowledge and he thought he was hiding what he had done.
Later, Judah was told that Tamar was pregnant. Like many sinners, he took his own personal guilt out on someone else. "Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things" (Romans 2:1). Judah demanded that she die a horrible death by burning. When she was brought to Judah, she told him that the man who got her pregnant had this seal and staff. Judah admitted that these were his. Until this time, he thought his visits to prostitutes were private sins. Now, in front of others he not only had to admit that he was seeing prostitutes, but that he unknowingly had sex with his daughter-in-law. "So Judah acknowledged them and said, "She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her again" (Genesis 38:26). What Tamar did was wrong, but Judah is saying that compared to her, his own sins were so much greater that she in comparison was more righteous than he.
But take note that Judah never had sex with Tamar again. He knew this was sinful. Yet, he also owned up to his sin. He took the twin boys of Tamar and acknowledged them as his own sons. Tamar was also supported the rest of her life. These are actions that indicate a man who had repented of his sins and was trying to make the best of the mess he created. As Elihu pointed out, the proper response to sin is to quit. "For has anyone said to God, 'I have borne chastening; I will offend no more; teach me what I do not see; if I have done iniquity, I will do no more'?" (Job 38:31-32). Judah was publicly chastised and he quit his sin.
Where is God's wrath? It is standing aside to as God demonstrates His mercy, just as He has shown mercy to you.

The verse has already told you were the sin lie and it is not in the act of sexual intercourse but rather in his withdrawal of his penis at the time of ejaculation.
One can read much into his withdrawal and what it may mean....but that's a discussion for another time.

It is one of God statutes/ordinances that is called a Levirate Marriage in which the brother of the deceased is obligated to give her a son.....in those days artificial insemination was unknown to most if not all. So Onan having sex with his dead brother's wife was not considered a filthy behavior but the morally responsible thing to do.
When Onan refuse to impregnate his decease brother's wife he disobey one of God's statutes...

Go Look At the passage....and learn that it was all done to protect the woman - not to use or abuse her.

In order for a marriage to be finalize and valid/real.....one must ROOKS the woman - consummation.
The ROOKSING is more important than the ceremony.....that is why Tamar went an got her ROOKSING from Judah.
The purpose of the ROOKSING is to secure an offspring....especially a Male child.

Here are my two conclusions that helps me put them together:1. The sins of the fathers are punished in the children through becoming the sins of the children.

I the Lord...visit the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.” (Exodus 20:5; cf. Numbers 14:18)

The generations to come who experience the penalty of the fathers’ sins are those who hate God. We are not told how the fathers’ sins become the children’s sins. But what we are told is that when the father’s sins are visited on the children it is because the children are really sinful. That is the form in which the fathers’ sins are visited. Therefore, all judgment is really deserved by the person who is punished.
2. Because of God’s grace, which is finally secured by Christ, the children can confess their own sins and the sins of their fathers and be forgiven and accepted by God.

But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers...if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, then I will remember my covenant with Jacob” (Leviticus 26:40-42).

The precious words of Exodus 34:6-7 are not nullified by the generational migration of sin.
The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.

Now adultery is Having sex with another man's wife, this may still apply even if she is a divorcee.
Having multiple sex partners, in the case of the man if the women are all unmarried, then there is no sin.
In the case of the woman having sex with multiple male partners is a sin or fornication or adultery

Most sin is against your own Soul and or Spirit......but some types of sin may be copied or emulated by the succeeding generations. Children often learn what they see.

That maybe the present day dictionary definition of fornication but not the bible's definition of fornication.....Fornication simply means sexual immorality and Leviticus 18 lays out exactly all the acts that are considered to be fornication.

Sex between two unmarried people is fornication for the woman, but could be at the most considered theft or injury (damaging someone else's property) for the man......all of this goes away if they agree to marry or if the man pays the required restitution - for they have been joined.

In which case the woman will forever be damaged or injured whilst (her seal has been broken - hymen.... virginity has been taken) the man status in society remains whole and unchanged.

You will note that fornication has to do mostly with incestuous type relationships and not stranger to stranger premarital relationships.

Zanah-porneia-fornication
Zanah the Hebrew word for Porneia - means Prostitution/harlotry and Idolatry.
Porneia means illicit or immoral sex - more specifically as in one who is selling sex..

Everything that I have enlarged can be found in Leviticus 18, it shows consistency of meaning.
The addition of premarital is an anachronism and inconsistency.
I have already shown you how premarital sex was handled by the ancient Hebrew people.

The Immorality that Jesus is referring to is found in Leviticus 18......in which there is no mention of premarital sex.

Lastly I shall remind you of the circumstances surrounding the birth of Obed. Ruth on the advice of Naomi seduced Boaz with premarital sex.

No pornea covers all types of sexual immorality including premarital sex.

Instead of trying to wiggle our way out of it...for Jamaica this should be a priority.

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Prov. 14:34).

How can we expect God go bless our nation if we persist in sexual immorality and slackness? It is like drinking poison and expecting to be healthy.

In national affairs, God has always ruled over the kingdoms of men (Dan. 4:17; Rom. 13:1-6), and we can be confident in this: God is alive and active in world history just as much today as He was in ancient times. His word says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Prov. 14:34).But a word of caution is in order. Though we can be confident that God is vitally interested in human and national affairs, it can be greatly misleading to attempt to discern His will in every specific matter. In His infinite wisdom, God allows some wicked nations to prosper for a time while others are quickly cast down. Even the prophet Habakkuk could not understand how God could punish His own people while the “more wicked” Babylonians were allowed to prosper (cf. Hab. 1:12-17). Indeed, God does not think and act like man does — His thoughts and actions are higher than ours (Isa. 55:8).
When one reads the Bible, some particular sins seem to be very prominent reasons for God’s judgment upon a people in history. This is not to say that God is more concerned with some sins than others, but His word does seem to consistently bring the same issues to the attention of guilty nations. While the following will not be an exhaustive list, consider some of the more common reasons for God’s condemnation of an entire nation:

Embracing Sexual Sin — “Let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth, for I hate divorce... says the Lord of Hosts” (Mal. 2:15-16). “Neither fornicators… nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites… will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:9-10). From ancient times, sexual sin has been an abomination before God. He is our Creator (Gen. 1:26-29), and He alone has the right to express to us how to use the bodies He has created. When cultures embrace and celebrate sexual sin, God’s judgment is often exercised within history. He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for, among other things, their sexual depravity (cf. Gen. 18:20-19:29).

Of course this is not the only area for repentance but it is an important one.
