Home Office

I converted child's former bedroom into a home office. The room is paneled with knotty pine that was a feature of the house built in 1951. Every time I broached the subject of what to do with these ugly walls, I've been met with two kinds of people: those who love knotty pine paneling and those who hate it.

The room has plenty of light from two windows that meet at the southwest corner. But it still felt dark. When my son was a teenager I attempted to lighten the room by adding cream-colored carpet and bright red pillows etc. It worked for him then, but it doesn't for me now. So I decided to repaint and create a light-filled home office.

Here is the room being prepped for painting.

Paint choices are:
- Paneling: Benjamin Moore's Sweet Innocence with eggshell finish
- Ceiling: Benjamin Moore's Whisper Violet
- Wood trim and door: Benjamin Moore Distant Gray (almost white) eggshell finish

I added new:
- commercial grade carpet with blue and grey tones from Home Depot
- love seat and ottoman from LazBoy
- white filing cabinets from Staples
- computer desk - mango wood with bone inlay - from West Elm

The closet is now a printing, filing area with paper recycle and shredder. I installed a shelf above the printer where I store current files for my business. The blue canvas boxes above are by Martha Stewart found at Home Depot.

The pin board above computer monitor is a framed burlap board I found at Home Goods.

I need help in hiding those cables and wires from the computer

Yes, I have a laptop but the work I do at home requires much more.

Very nice, Peasie. I'm all for painting knotty pine as it makes the room looks much brighter. One of my friends refuses to paint the knotty pine in her house and although those rooms are on the top floor and should be flooded with light, they are so very dark.

I don't have any ideas for the cables though, but if I come across anything, I'll post it here.

They have some tube that you can put the wires in. Love the paint bright and cheerful

The console table has a beach wash finish.



The task chair for the desk is coming in two weeks. It looks like this (seat is blue) and every thing on it is adjustable. Mi gwine feel like Capt Kirk of the Starship Enterprise in it

Did you have to use any primer on the wood first?

Yes. The paneling was lightly sanded, then holes and cracks in the wood filled, then another light sanding, then TWO coats of primer were applied, followed by two coats of paint.
