I am so sorry to hear. It is better you be up front with the biting information though than to subject someone else to a bad experience with a rescue. It would make them never want to do it again.
Letting him loose is the worst thing you can do. Trust me, he would be better off being put down that that.
The only other thing I can think of is if you can find a cat person who would take him in. Sometimes there are foster homes we aren't aware of. Maybe call your local veterinarian offices and ask if they know anyone who can help you keep him from being put down and tell them this is your last resort.
The only other thing I can think of is if you were to keep him caged. I know one cat who lives in a large dog cage because he isn't clean about using the litter box otherwise. He has toys and perches and his food and water and he seems just fine. It is not an ideal situation but his choice was that or death.
