Puppy

My stepson mentioned that some kids told him his dog was loose. He went to look. It was a female who looks a lot like Barney. She is younger, smaller female and her ears look more like a German Shepard.

Last night she came out barking at Barney and I on our walk. She came from where she lives to the parking lot of the HOA. A woman there was asking if she was mine.(not good) I said that she came from next door. She has no collar on her.

The woman that owned her appeared in the drive way. She said she keeps getting loose. She swims in the canal behind the villas that we live in. (HELLO! this is south Florida ) We discussed that running loose is not safe. She could get hit by a car or eaten by a gator, or picked up by animal control.

So my step son came home this evening and said look who followed me home. The little black dog with no collar of course. He said that no one is home where she lives (so she was left in a yard with a broken fence) Mr. JD said she has to go home.

So Jr. and Mr. JD were going to leave a note on the owners door that she is here. I hate to give her back. I am afraid we will soon see her dead in the road. But, I can't just thief her.

I'm thinking I should have taken her to animal control and tell them I'll take her if the owner does not come for her. But, that would be kind of sneaky as I know who owns her. I figure that way she'd get her shots and spayed etc. But, if Mr. JD does not give in she could wind up being put down.

Right now her and Barney and playing together. He even let her eat from his dish.

I don't think I can legally keep her if the owner shoes up. And Mr. JD may kill me

That's a tough one especially if Mr. JD is not down for it.

If she were not your next door neighbor, then I would say take the pup to animal control. That way the owner could have saved face if she didn't want to go get the puppy and you could go get her before time was up. Maybe it could still work by shaming her into doing better.

She lives down the street. They left the owner a note that the puppy is here (address &amp; phone # was left)

You would think so. I guess the only thing you can do is wait and see and work on Mr. JD. If she's down the street then that's different. It's not like she would have to see the puppy at your house every day.

Her owner still might come for her. Mr. JD may give in. He will feel bad for her.

I am pretty sure I'll find her running loose again. I just do not know what to do about it.

ETA the owner came with out a leash or collar. I asked her how she was going to get her home. She said she was going to carry her . I think she must weigh about 25 lbs.
