I just had to sit here for a moment and decide what to say next.

OK, so my dog gets a yearly vaccine accompanied by a little metal tag to put on her collar. What good is that if there is no way to determine if a pet has rabies without killing him/her? Should I assume there is no cure for rabies?

I am not sure, but I think there is no cure for Rabies in animals. Humans can get a series of shots so that they may survive.

IMHO, Jamaica could ease up on accepting (well documented) vaccinated pets.

Again, I think they should charge fees that help animals on the island.

I think it should be easy enough to test the dog for rabies upon arrival. Make the owner pay for it so expense is not the issue. Well, that's just my opinion anyway and I know a lot of people don't look at pets as part of the family.

Hmm. I'll have to give some thought to whether I believe this. You can deadpan state anything as fact, but that doesn't make it true.

This conflicts with Nanook saying there was perhaps a shortage of vaccine to treat it.

However, if you never had it then what threat could vaccinated dogs pose? I think just some basic testing that the owner pays for would make everyone happy.

I thought the treatment for rabies was for humans.. the pets would be euthanized.

I raised dogs in Jamaica for a while. The chief of immigration in my town got one, and the chief of immigration from Mo'bay came all the way to get one too. I waltzed through immigration after that.

The dogs in Jamaica are very cool, intelligent, clean short coats, tender eyes, whip tails. I thought that with some selective breeding, and fifteen years, a terrific breed could be created... or uncovered... revealed.

But I agree, of course, that many Jamaicans are hateful towards dogs. I lost three to poison, and one was stolen over the years.

But on the other hand, I get along well with dogs, and some people respected that. It lent a little mystery to my story, and opened some doors.

I have no problem with Jamaican dogs. I have met many that are great.

I would certainly get one or two if I lived there.

I just would not want to give up Barney who I have had since he was 5 months old. He is now 4 years old.

Too bad! I had a shot at a GREAT job in Jamaica. If I could bring him, I would be packing now!
