What unno planting this year?

my garden will have
corn
carrot
zucchini
cucumber
strawberry
peas
beans
tomatoes
bell peppers
mint
green onions
some herbs
likkle callaloo (I can still take more seeds if anybody have any to spare)
and I'm going to plant some flowers.

I am slowly getting into my summer garden. I didn't plant one thing during our primary gardening season. (Sept - Feb)

So far I have:
White Yam
Scotch bonnet
Skellion
Thyme

This week is supposed to be on the cool side, so maybe I will try my hand at potatoes (per Ms Exced's instructions) and I need to spread callaloo and plant di sorrell. I also would like to purchase some tomato plants, although they take lots of work and attention to survive the Florida summer.

And the squirel them having a field day with the strings beans so I don't think they going to survive.

I remember when you were setting it up a few years ago so I think you have had enough time to have likes and deslikes so what do you like about it and what dont you like?

how big are are your beds?

What would you do different?

Did the ground cover thing really work for the weeds?

My dearest TwinzieBoo,

The late Mr. PZ made me a raised garden bed four years ago. It was an L-shaped plot - 12'x8' more or less - with the bottom of the "L" being 4'x4'. This shape works very well (I have a small lot) as it allows me to work with ease without having to get in the garden beds. Here it is with my first plantings.



You can see the garden blanket that we laid down first. That was to stop the weeds from growing up from the ground. It works well but you really can't keep anything weed-free! Last year during the house renovation, I could not have a vegetable garden and by the Fall it was totally taken over with some major weeds. Here in the mid-Atlantic states we have some serious vines (kudzu and virginia creeper) that have taken over everything! I hired someone to remove all those weeds then covered the raised garden beds with tarp until early March this year.

What would I do differently? Nothing really. I love this setup very much. Most important to note: <span style="font-weight: bold">Do not use pressure-treated lumber</span>. They have poisonous chemicals (arsenic I heard) that can leach in the plants. Just use untreated lumber and brush with linseed oil. The lumbers have now weathered and sections are even rotting, but I have several more years left out of them.

The photo above also shows the large stone tiles Mr. PZ had laid down around the beds. Last year I extended my back patio almost to the raised vegetable bed. In the photo below it is over by the far left -- all overgrown before it was cleaned out. You can see those badwud badwud vines growing over the fence from my neighbor's house. Earlier this month the neighbor replaced her fence and the vines and I continue to fight every week. I my cordless string trimmer from Black and Decker.

Here's my plot this year.

Six tomato plants: three yellow, three red - dem bearing like di dikens

Three eggplant

Sweet pepper - dem look fluxy

Thyme in ground

And one deggeh deggah callaloo plant From the batch Kia sent me

Scotch bonnet, various herbs not in picture but dem doing well

Went out in my garden this morning and got callaloo, eggplant, tomatoes, and some (fluxy) small sweet peppers

Nice auntie PZ ... mi eat all the lettuce and radishes already (just had some salad) and plant fresh ones last night ... keep the eggplant and give me the rest.
All my peppers and tomatoes are blossoming and I think the zucchini too but then I dont really know and my peas and beans are flowering The corn them nice and tall and unlike Vannie the wind the other day didnt affect my green onions
