ooo! pergola was on my list too (before my lack of money brought me down to reality). i'm watching avidly, Liz, because I also have an existing deck, and for some reason, i thought it would be complicated to sink the poles around it - but i see your hubby has simply put the pole on top of the existing deck... so cool! does it smell nice at all? Mine has a shoot of about a foot long on it...all its done for 3 years now...appears to have a little more energy this year...if it ever gets even a tenth of the size yours is...it's going to need to be moved from where i'm attempting to make it grow.

I haven't noticed a smell...and it would be worth planting some annual vine with a strong smell for this spot for sure.

It attracts hummingbirds and bees - a LOT, and even ants (sort of like a peony, where they "tickle" the buds open).

It will need some help getting up there this year but i think after that it will be fine....i'll update again when it's all done [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Thanks IM, I am looking forward to the shade....right now it's really hot and sunny there until about 6PM, this ought to give us a lot more of a summer day to use out there.

We've had a tiny delay...it's almost finished but for one more piece of the larger wood up top - he needs to go get that, and the smaller pieces in between.

I'll get some in the next few days.

Well my dear husband, typically, has still not put the ONE board that was missing and the little cross-boards up yet...this is at most an hour project and he did 99.9% of the work in two days....like 3 weeks ago.

He actually went to the store today to get the last boards so MAYBE this week I can show you the absolutely finished project.
