Arborday.org classifies japanese red maples are slow to medium growers, which means:

The designation slow means the plant grows 12” or less per year; medium refers to 13 to 24” of growth per year; and fast to 25” or greater.”

I had one that started off at about 12 inches or so, now 10 years later when I go back to look at it, it all of about 5-6 feet high or so.
