For the liners along the path, you could try getting some bricks to disguise them. I think that would go nicely seeing that you have a brick house also.




Oh and I love that trellis. Also, i think pea gravel suits the path better than white marble.

migawd, what a uncooperative part of the garden. mi grass dem jussa grow togedda without distinction. the sweet potato vine dem to the right a struggle (compared to two years ago).

not to mention the lone sunflower there in front, weh seed from last year. mi a leff it right dehso.

I love grasses. Just bought one and planted in the back today....they need lots of room, they get big! and full!
Down here in GA they get gigantic with big plumes 6-7 ft tall.

Thanks, nanceejay. do you think it's too late to space them out more? i don't want to kill them...there's a yard in the neighbourhood with some magnificent plumed grasses and i want mine to look like that, though i'm not sure i've got the right variety. grasses are kind of hard to find.

Mrs. Ochi, there's absolutely nothing like a perennial garden. You should see me in spring, rejoicing at the new plants coming up after a winter of snow and cold. it just renews you spiritually. of course, you also have the challenge of trying to remember what's what. it's amazing how many weeds look like garden plants! You can transplant anytime...I've done it in ther summer and fall...they are pretty hardy........

Mgal, just lovely! Don't fret too much about placement, etc. Just keep moving and dividing to suit you. As long as you water enough, you can pretty much do it from spring through fall. I prefer the pea gravel to the white stone, too.

Dusty Miller is technically an annual for us, but I have had it overwinter, too. There are varieties of artemsia that are perennial, though.

Wish I could come steal some divisions!

Pepper, nematodes is the answer, but it is usually grass they bother, not so much perennials. I think your yard would look awesome with a nice tropical theme out front there, and perhaps give you more privacy, too!

thank you, loops, it IS calendula - i verified it. the neighbour gave it to me last year, and i let it go to seed, and this year mi still can't stop pull them up - although i confess i'm seduced by the splendid orange flower with the red centre. Here are some more, alongside marigolds that I bought and which disappointed me, and some alyssum that reseeded from last year, not to mention the weeds [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif[/img]



BTW, would you know what this plant is - the same neighbour gave it to me, and neither she nor i know what it is. it was growing from some kind of rhizome:

anytime, Compry. i can give away hostas, and also phlox, and the pernicious bishop's weed i gave sue couple years ago. you can also have some more hens and chicks. here'a closer view of my new "cobweb" ones.

Thanks, Skelly. mi seh, di liner was the hardest part. i couldn't get them down deep enough. i was hoping to disguise them with border plants, but i think i need to fatten up the soil lickle more, caw the border plant dem (like alyssum) don't grow consistently enough. i'm not sure bricks would work, think i would just run into the same problem of not being able to sink them down far enough into the soil.

i liked the idea of pea gravel too. but the neighbours tell me the white marble looks more stunning. and my daughter says the pea gravel is too unstable to walk on, especially on that little incline. not to mention last year the cat was peeing in it. GreenB - thanks, i'm loath to move plants around because that's a bad habit my mom has [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70390-shhh.gif[/img] and her garden never seems to get lush because the plants never seem to get settled. Except around her pond, the microclimate there does wonders for the plants.

i'll space out the grass a little later in the season.

i'm thinking of taking out hostas along side of driveway in the last pic, because i want more colour along that side, leading up to the bed of hens and chicks. i tried planting nasturtium from seeds behind those hostas forthe colour but only one deggeh one flowered, so mi have to come with another plan.

ok...this appears to be a perennial geranium, of which there are many varieties. might be a purple cranesbill? if you can get it healthier, it will spread nicely.

your fuzzy lambs ears there, will please you better if you trim them back when they send up those pink spires...the flowers really aren't that much compared to those cool fuzzy leaves. watch out for that plant...i had to yank out a yard full a few years back.

a sedum collection sounds fun...theres tons of different interesting types. go for it!

well, you know Skelly i was resisting the idea, cause i think i have too much foliage already, but in fact hostas may both solve the problem of the ugly liner AND add a little more orderliness. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70402-thinking.gif[/img]

I have heard that if you have a slug problem to bury a few cans ground level around the garden with the tops cut off and put beer in the cans. I think it was the county extension office that told me that back when I was living on the lake. Hope that helps.
