okay, I got some good advice. I'm gonna leave the desk as is but the filing cabinets and the credenza I am going to stain in the color I want. This will lighten up the room but will allow the wood grain to show thru on the two pieces to retain some character.

Clear coat is great, but if the paint doesn't stick properly neither will the clear-coat since it's OVER the paint.

I like the wooden cabinet matching the desk, the file cabinets though... tough decision. They're so industrial (I have some as well... still not sure what I want to do with them).

Were you thinking the same color as the walls to blend in? or to match the sofa?

they have special paints for the industrial filing cabinets.

there are paints for just about every surface out there so go ahead and paint away

Q.K. I want to sand the pieces down and stain the pieces to match my sofa. I don't want a clear coat but to change the color of the pieces. Someone told me that I can find colored stains that will match what I want.

I'll post pix when I am done.

Will the stain work on the metal cabinet? Usually stains are made for wood.

I know there are some &quot;solid&quot; stains, but I assumed they were for exterior use.

Also to use stains on the wood, would you need to strip off the darker stain in order to use the lighter stain? Mi canfuse...

dark stain has to be stripped off, lighter stain applied and don forget the rags to wipe the stain off in the direction of the grain to bring out the wood grain under the stain. Let the the stain stay on for a few minutes and then wipe off.
No circular movements, just in the directing of the grain.

and here I thought I made myself clear

if u look at the pix u see I have one wood calinet and one metal...the metal one is a no brainer....it is the wood one I am asking about.

So, yes the goal is to strip the paint off the wood cabinet and credenza and apply a colored stain to lighten up the pieces. Make sense now?

Well, I got some of the supplies but not all yet.

I need to buy tarp and such to do the sanding/spraying/painting business. Not too sure how to keep the mess down to a minimum.
