Changing the Front Yard Colors

So I have been playing with color combinations in the front of my house. I am very indecisive about what color flowers and scrubs I want so I plant things in pots to see how they look before I do anything permanent.

Now, I have realized that the beds along the pathway, the colors are flat and dont stand out against the color of the house.


[*]I have Dicentera (sp) which are dark pink when in bloom [*]and then the light yellow shrubs behind them turn medium green with light purple flowers when it blooms in the summer.

<span style="font-weight: bold">What would be a better color cominbation along the pathways than what I have now given the color of my house?</span>



The red mulch just drains all the color out of the view so I want to change that to something else.

<span style="font-weight: bold">As for the pots, I am thinking of white flowers which looked good against the house last year and perhaps red?</span>

****oops. this is a picture from the beginning of <span style="font-weight: bold">LAST</span> spring. I forgot that those terracota (sp?) pots are all painted a deep deep red courtesy of me ****** Hence why thr white flowers looked nice but the washed out red mulch looks terrible now.

I just cant seem to make up my mind what colors I want to work with this year especially since I want to change up the walk way.

since I painted the pots dark red the white flowers did look nice against them and did stand out.

I cant locate where I stored the photos to show u.

The pink flowers need to go along with the faded red mulch cause it doesnt look to bright and cheery to me against the beige siding.

If I do red and orange flowers then I guess I would need to make the mulch a neutral color so it doesnt compete.

I got inspiration from Bizi's washington trip thread, and I am going to red and purple with hits of white this year.


I want a more unified look cause I tend to buy whatever I like at a moment and plunk it down.

Change the mulch to a neutral woodsy tone so as to not compete with the flowers and shrubs.

Great idea Pepper

Use stone instead of mulch. I just had mulch stuck in my head for some reason

I know I want white in there so the pebbles will be a good way to incorporte it.

I have grey pebbles in the back pathway and the do like to travel

however, i find the same issue exists with mulch too. Strong winds, etc will blow it all over the place and into spots i dont want.

SO I think I need to improve the edging I have around both pathways. You know that black rubber stuff you can push down as borders.

Hopefully, it will keep whatever material in place.
