I dont make any decision like that too quickly so i wouldnt be partng with my money too quick.

well, the ppl at Home Depot didnt know what the hell I was talking about....well then niether did I to an extent

I didnt make it to my favorite garden centre yesterday, so I will go looking for it over the weekend.

I was going to replace the mulch this weekend but

a) we got a blanket of frost last night
b) doesnt make sense to do so until I have finalized which plants I want to move and/or replace

We are getting snow tonight so obviously planting is not much on my mind! I go by the moon and since the next full moon is in early May, I will wait till after that to think about planting anything. It seems much colder on those full moon nights, with clear skies so bigger chance of frost. This is the mantra that I have always gone by but then it seems your weather this time of year is not as harsh?

compared to last year yes We had a snow storm April 15th and got a few feet of snow. That was brutal.

Technically, we are not out of the woods until June

I have seen late May and early June snow storms but those havent happened in eons.

I wanted to maybe move some of the shrubs before it warms up and they come out of dormancy. But for actual flowers and such, I usually wait until the May long weekend. You do anything before then most ppl think you are nuts.

Some tulips and a few other bulbs I planted last yr are peaking thru though. Cant remember the name of one of them got the word snow in the name - but they are supposed to bloom at this time of year and are very hardy.

So far I have been alright with the May long weekend marker. If the temp does dip I try to remember to cover the beds with a blanket or something.

ok....let me try briefly to offer my thoughts.

first....the mulch will stay better if you edge properly. you need an edger...and dig around the outside edge of the beds...sort of at an angle...so you kinda end up with a bit of a trench there on the edge. that should hold the lawn back and the mulch in.

i totally agree...the dark mulch is so much better because it doesn't compete with the plants for attention like that red stuff does.

i'd suggest you widen those beds to almost twice what you have there...or the battle will be constant to keep the lawn from encroaching. plus a wider bed will allow you to plant more stuff...rather than having that row look you have now.

plants...hmmmmmm...that's more difficult...as it's all in what you like to see. i'd try some tall daisies~yellow towards the back...working towards the foreground and going gradually down in height with your flowers. i love purple and shades of pink together...but there is no doubt that red stands out best from the road. there just isn't many red plants that make me happy. if you want red...consider dark purple, red and white...as they do stand out nice against eachother.

also....some gray type plants, like artemesia or dusty miller will help to make the flowers pop more too.

so that's my initial reaction. I like the pots up on the stoop.

to be honest...you don't wanna know what i'd do...but it would involve ridding most of that lawn. lol

yes you are right. There is edging around the borders there but they have sunk into the ground and are no longer effective. They are that stiff rubber material but I think I need to use a different material to keep the mulch in place.

Dig around the outside of the borders? I dont think I am following that part?

only problem with widening the beds is that I hit the property line real quick On the lief side, the property line is maybe 5 feet away. On the right side, I have a tree about 4 feet away, centered to my front window. I would hit the tree plus I think it would look awkward given the narrowness of my lot.

yes that is what I had in mind. I found some really nice dark red flowers for my zone the other day, but dont ask me to remember any names at the moment

I am a fan of pink flowers but the ones I had last year just looked too washed out against the beige siding.

I think I had some artemsia later in the season for the reasons you mentioned above. The dusty white leaves looked nice against the yellow and orange lilies I eventually had in the pots.

Dont remember if they are perennials in zone 3 though.

Cant really do so because the area is architecturally controlled to a certain extent. Have to have a certain number of shrubs in your front yard and trees only of a certain caliper.

The neighbors down the road did their front yard in beautiful grey gravel and pebbles. But they had to fight tooth and nail to keep it and forfeit their landscaping deposit to have no grass in the front yard.
