GET VERTICAL
The easiest way to get your cucumbers growing up is to plant them in cages - the same ones you use to cage your tomatoes. Since caged cucumbers require less space you can plant them closer together.

Squash

Squash plants have both female and male blooms. Sometimes, a plant will have all male blooms at first, and then the female ones appear. It is necessary for both sexes of blooms to be present to produce.

Male and Female Blooms
Female blossoms have a little, round "ovary" at the base of their flowers. Male blossoms have a long, thin stem at the base of theirs. If you don't have enough bees for good pollination, or if it has been raining frequently (making the bees less active), you can easily pollinate the blossoms yourself. I use two methods:

Take a male blossom from a squash plant, and just lightly brush female flowers with it. Use one male blossom for up to 10 females.
Use a slender brush (such as an eye shadow makeup brush), or a cotton swab to transfer the dust-like pollen from the male to the female blossoms. The best time to do this is early morning

Companion Plants in the Vegetable Garden
There are some plants that, when planted close together, will benefit each other. Likewise, there are certain combinations of plants that will inhibit the growth of one or both types of plants. Here are a few combinations to avoid:

Potatoes – inhibit growth of tomatoes and squash
Beans – inhibit growth of onions
Broccoli – inhibits growth of tomatoes
Carrots – inhibit growth of dill
This isn’t to say that you can’t grow these plants together in the same garden, just don’t grow them right next to each other.

I was reading about this last night....it is called alleopathy (?sp) cause plants give off chemicals that make sure that no one can crowd them out of their territory.

who knew that green onions are pernnials in zone 3

I have a whole bushel growing that came up from last year. I thought they were too delicate for this.

at first I had no idea what the heck it was.

I just picked one and they smell like heaven

just tossed it into my Quinoa for supper tonight

when I planted mine the pack said to hold some back for planting in the fall so i did

Instead of purchasing expensive landscape cloth, herbicides or spending hours on your knees pulling weeds, good old fashion newspaper is a great substitute to control weeds. Use several sheets of newspaper as you would landscape cloth. Cover the paper with soil, mulch or landscape stones. It allows moisture into the soil and blocks most weeds for at least 3 years. The thicker the layer of paper the longer it will last. Eventually the newspaper composts into the soil. Also, run old newspaper through your paper shredder and add it to your compost pile. It will turn to compost within a few weeks.

When planting something in a large pot, put a plastic pint or quart-size (depending on the size of your pot) cottage cheese container (or yogurt, margarine - whatever) upside down in the bottom of your large pot. Add potting mix &amp; your plant. The plastic container fills in the pot so you don't have to use as much soil. It also makes a large pot much lighter than if it were filled completely with soil!

I grew cukes against a chain link fence. Had a deal with the neighbor that anything that grew on his side he could keep.
He was an older man who lived alone. He couldn't keep up with the cukes on his side!!
