As soon as the person said they were Dahlias my brain clicked, "of course"
I just had it stuck in my head that they wer peonies b/c the bag said peonies. No application of logic whatsoever 
I agree with both of you that they are lovely plants. I just didnt expect the spread to happen
I have pernnials buried underneath them and those are too expensive to have die out just for some pretty annuals. So last week I chopped the nasturiums back. I tried to stake them so they grow up and not out. We shall see if that works.
I really didnt put much effort into growing them other than using a plant food. They seemed hardy to me b/c while I was away they were the one plant that thrived even with minimal water. All my other annuals pretty much died out
