Is this a just a matter of good economics or is this home-made detergent on par or better than its commercial counterparts?

Yes. Yes. And yes.

I've been doing this for the entire 21 years that I've been living with (1 year) and married to (20 years) Mr Witchy - his first career was as a chemist.

And while I use Fels Naptha AND a few other different bar soaps... I also use a Blue Power grated up in one for whites laundry. Am I the only one who does that?

I keep a jar of Blue Power homemade detergent for whites, a jar of regular homemade detergent, and a jar of scented homemade detergent. I do all of our whites with the Blue Power detergent powder. I do Mr Witchy's clothes with the unscented stuff, and my clothes with my scented stuff. (He doesn't choose to wear rose-scented, or tuberose/ylang-ylang-scented or jasmine-scented clothes to work... gee, wonder why - dwl!) I do our sheets with the unscented stuff, but toss in a lightly lavender-scented or a light citrus-scented sachet with them when I toss them into the dryer. He doesn't mind that as much...

I make my own fabric softener, too... and I use white vinegar in the final rinse of all of my loads of laundry - machine or hand laundry.
I also make my own personal products, like cold cream, facial scrubs & skin treatments, bath soaps (bar, gel & soft/liquid), bath scents, shower scents, shampoos & conditioners & hair treatments, lip balms, deep softening skin balms, etc. I don't buy much of anything commercial any more. I still buy Crest toothpast because I'm too damn lazy to make my own tooth powder - it's too much of a PitA and I'm too busy with other things... so I let that slide. dwl
