Kia, I remember when I was growing up, we were talked to real good at home and were taught to stick up for ourselves. I can remember being put out of Math class by this White teacher that lied and said I cursed in class "the woman was always picking on the Black students. I sat in the vice principles office for about 3 days straight because I refused to say I was sorry.

The vice principle " He was Black" knew that I didn't say such a thing but talked me into going to class. At the time I hated him too, all she would have done was give me afailing grade and she would have won. My grandmother and mother was proud that I tried to stick up for myself.

She was in better spirits today.. She told me the asst camp director spoke to her but she couldnt remember what was discussed as she was more interested in telling me something else about the day.. so will get the info later

I once intervened in a &quot;circle&quot; where the older girl (about 8) was going around telling each girl whether they had pretty hair or ugly hair. When she got to my daughter's best friend, who had locks, she stopped and looked at me. I pronounced &quot;Kim's&quot; hair to be gorgeous and the little girl looked at me so amazed. These were all kids of color, varying backgrounds. sometimes internal racism can be vicious.

I wish I had my daughter's hair. It's long, black and curly down to her waist. Thank God she's never cut or straightened it, as I preached against that while she was growing up.

She seems to be a very sturdy young miss from you prior descriptions of her so this is small stuff. She already knows that her hair is acceptable...

I am not too sure about this because with so many black women taking the 'african out of their hair' how can she not think something must be 'wrong' with hers. She had received fantastic complements at school so I guess was shocked at the different response at camp.

This is more than a little teasing, when the whole class plus the counselers are laughing that's another story. teasing often turns into bullying, if you don't nip it in the bud it can get worst. I would show her pics of kids and adults with the same hair texture as hers and show her the videos by India Irie. I know you do this but keep telling her how beautiful she is, maybe have a girls day out and do something special. Role playing usually helps too, you can pretend that you are her and she is one of the &quot;teasers&quot; at camp. Bounce off ideas of what to say to them if it happens again.

Of course one should nip any issue that's mentally debilitating, if you can , but at the same time, we have to allow children to develop a thick skin in order to live in today's world because many people don't seem to have time nor the inclination to know how to be interactively pleasant.

That's why I suggested role playing, 9 times out of 10 if she flipped the situation back on them the teasing would have stopped.
