What I would like to see is more fathers involved with their children. The reality is one's attention can only span so far so with 25 children how will he be able to emotionally support them all. Not all support is financial.

Maybe instead of paying child support and mothers having to go to court, fathers be sentenced to spend time with their kids, at home, at the playground, in school support... something

Fathers may not have $$ to give to all their children but children need more is time with parents

The Myth of the "Deadbeat Dad" Label

The scornful term of "deadbeat dads" has become increasingly popular in describing fathers who do not uphold their legal responsibility of supporting their children after divorce.

These days, the derogatory title comes with the attached connotations drawing to mind images of fathers who abandon responsibility to their kids and don't care about them at all. That is not usually the case.

The legal definition defines deadbeat parents as "parents of either gender who have freely chosen not to be supportive parents or who do not pay their child support obligations." However, the label has become so generalized that the "freely chosen" aspect is too often forgotten.

Most of the fathers lumped in as deadbeats are not dads unwilling to support their children -- they are simply unable to afford the child support. When 66 percent of all child support not paid by fathers is due to an inability to come up with the money, calling all the dads who miss payments "deadbeats" is painting with far too broad of a brush.

As someone who founded a men's divorce law firm almost 25 years ago, I know most of these men are not bad people; they love their kids, they want what is best for their kids, they want to be there for their kids.

However, because of the way custody orders often work out, many of these fathers rarely get the opportunity to see their children while some don't get to see them at all. (Just the latest case in point is the recent release of startling stats from Nebraska showing 72 percent of child custody cases result in dads only seeing their children 5.5 days a month.)

Despite how they may feel, these loving fathers are stigmatized as deadbeats -- regardless of why they missed the payments.

The problem is further complicated by harsh laws and punishments enacted on those unable to come up with the money. If a father is behind on his payments, the state or child support agencies will do anything in their power to collect what is owed, including garnishing wages, intercepting their income tax refund, or suspending their driver's license.

If a father gets too far behind and these methods fail, a court hearing is scheduled and the father (who in many states is not provided an attorney because the case is a civil and not criminal matter) could be facing up to one year in jail; again, simply because they are too poor to afford the payments.

Lacking the money to pay child support all but guarantees they cannot afford legal counsel on their own, leaving them to the whim of an unrelenting court system that looks down on them as horrible people and essentially ensures punishment.

This vicious treatment creates a modern-day debtor's prison for destitute fathers who are more often than not perfectly willing to pay their support if they had sufficient funds.

It can also create an unfair cycle: They are unable to pay their support, perhaps because they lost their job, so they are thrown in jail. They still won't have a job when they get out, but are required to make payments they can't afford, so they are thrown back into jail.

No matter how they try, broke fathers are not able to get back on their feet because the state continues to sweep their legs out from under them. Society and the courts scrutinize them as "deadbeats" and unloving fathers who have essentially abandoned taking care of their children.

However, it is frequently the unforgiving system itself that led them to their predicament in the first place.

Let Dad Have His Day: Dispelling the Myth of the Absent Black Father

It seems like all dads, but particularly black dads can’t catch a break these days. Celebrating my first Father’s Day as an actual father last month, I was scanning through my social media channels and noticed a troubling trend. While the vast majority of Facebook status updates and tweets I came across gave props to the dads and grand dads in people’s lives, there was a LOUD minority of Father’s Day trolls bashing one dad or another for being a poor or absent parent. Stuff like, “Father’s Day: The holiday that comes around more often than you do,” or, “Sorry honey. Hallmark doesn’t make Father’s Day cards for deadbeat dads.”

Another less troubling trend was memes and paying homage to single moms while denigrating absent fathers. “Thanks for picking up the slack from a deadbeat dad. Happy Father’s Day mom,” or “Oh, it’s Father’s Day? The single mothers of the world thank you for recognizing their ability to multitask… you’re welcome.” You get the idea.

It’s no secret that there’s a stereotype about black men in particular being absentee fathers, but recent studies indicate that the stigma may be unfair. An often cited 2013 Center for Disease Control (CDC) study on fathers’ involvement with their children found that black fathers who lived with one or more of their children were more likely to have participated in a number of child rearing tasks than Hispanic or white dads, including bathing, changing diapers, and taking the kids to and from activities. The study also found that black dads were less likely to marry their child’s mother than their Hispanic and white counterparts.

While responsible single mothers raising children largely on their own should be respected and admired, that shouldn’t take away from the crucial and important role that dads play in their children’s lives. There are any number of studies that prove the harmful effects absent dads play in the lives of children. A 2011 article on PsychologyToday.com illustrates dad’s importance.

• Fatherless children are at a dramatically greater risk of drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, suicide, poor educational performance, teen pregnancy, and criminality, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Center for Health Statistics.
• Over half of all children living with a single mother are living in poverty, a rate 5 to 6 times that of kids living with both parents
• Child abuse is significantly more likely to occur in single parent homes than in intact families;
• 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census;
• 72% of adolescent murderers grew up without fathers. 60% of America's rapists grew up the same way according to a study by D. Cornell (et al.), in Behavioral Sciences and the Law;
• 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes according to the National Principals Association Report on the State of High Schools;

And the list goes on and on.

As mentioned earlier, this year’s Father’s Day was particularly significant for me, becoming a first-time dad on May 19. There’s something about becoming a father that changes your whole perspective on life. You begin to see things differently, notice things about the world you never noticed before. Looking around my own social circle of predominately black males with college degrees, I realized most if not all of my friends who are dads are GREAT dads who dearly love their children. I saw numerous posts from FB friends with their kids on Father’s Day, men who post the same kind of pics all year long, not just on special occasions.

Look, I’m not naïve. I know there are too many bad dads out there who make it hard for responsible mothers to do their job effectively. But maybe if we spent more time recognizing dads who do right by their kids than those who don’t, we’d encourage more men to step up to the challenging, yet rewarding experience that is fatherhood.
