This question came to mind because I have a family member who is going through some disagreements with her husband....turbulent disagreements...then I am with her daily on the phone giving her advice...speaking directly from my own experience...she tells me that what I tell her is the same thing that her mother told her during all this...

I stop and think, and then say dang most of what I know is from going through it myself and if my mom or our mothers had shared half of this then would our relationships have been different?

I am telling you...you learn lots of things from eating together at that dinner-table especially on Sundays if you can move from home to home, visiting a different home each week.

Great question (and my siblings and I didn't even get the birds and bees either) but don't you think that we have a responsibility to find out ourselves? I say that because I don't think my parents would have known how to impart that information, even if they wanted to, but at the same time, I have always felt it important to have some understanding of the nuances of/for successful relationships and that is either from observing and/or talking to couples who are doing very well in those areas, and from reading wholesome perspectives on the subject.

this is interesting, but i dont think relationship (not sex) is something that is &quot;taught&quot; per se (ie. conversation). it is something that you kind of have to learn by watching. You watch, you see, you may ask a question here and there (if you have that kind of relationship with the people that you are watching) and you learn.

at least that is how i grew up and learn how to live with a man. then a lot of things you have to just learn on your own while you are in the middle of it, you have to seek the answers for yourself.

i agree with this. relationships and how to manage them is and ought to be shared knowledge. i've already started talking to my daughters about the issues that came up in the relationship between my father and me, so they have a sense of the dynamics that crop up in a marriage.

It is true...alot of things we learn on our own but for example...if my mother had probably told me:

Skelly, if a man comes home upset and does not want to talk to you it's not you that is bothering him. Give him time and space and he'll let you know what is on his mind. I think that would have saved me/us from many a arguments.

yes my mother.. she also had a number of issues as to how to pick a ooman to have children with..

She had to be strong
Smart
less problems than you...

The rest was just details...

She also taught me how to construct sweet talk for women, how to isolate their weakness and tun it to your advantage..

Mi grow a country who the hell need bird and bees mi grow a county... mi learn how tek animal ah stud fram mi bout 5 and mi had a lesson when mi start school on human sexuality at bout 6...

It's like the computer...you get basic instruction or figga out some certain tings..but...wid time...you learn wid practiss...
