I cant say how much the sight of the Obamas kids irritate me. I believe this choice of perming the hair should be left to children when they become adults and that they should not be exposed to such as children, especially by their parents.

It is like giving children drugs for an ailment they are expected to have.

Straightening childrens' hair is very common on this side of the world sukuna. Parents may have lost the art of knowing how to style & comb their daughters hair or given that we are in a fast paced society do not have the time to style their daughters hair without it being relaxed (therefore more convenient to comb).

Some parents may not know how to cornrow or depending on their child's hair cornrow is not a viable weeklong option.


When I was growing up it we got to choose when we were teenagers if we wanted our hair permed.

Is which side of the world you think me come from?

I would like to see the proof that black women no longer have the time to plat their children's hair, given the amount of time they spend on their own appearances. I don't buy that one.

And from the time I was born until now, how could this art of knowing how to style black hair become suddenly lost?
Nothing tall can go so.

And cornrow or rope as we call it does last a very long time when done, so to say it is a weeklong option is making no sense.

on my daughters hair a cornrow lasts a week cause her hair is soft and I will not have her roots pulled with her in tears for the sake of longer lasting cornrow.

You are over in Europe and I am in North America different side o the world to me.

I don't think the Obama kids hair is permed, from the pictures I see it looks more like it press as they go from braids/cornrow to straight depending on the occasion.

but I do agree with the not perming until they are old enough to decide. I see a few parents bring their little kids to the salon for perm because they can't manage the hair. I think it's sad.

my mom fried my hair

i turned 18 - got a fro

and that morphed into dreads

i can still smell that grease frying

and the tension of having to hold my ear - so she could do the edges

I received my first perm at about 7 years old.

My sis and I had really thick hair and my Mom could not manage it. By the time I was 9 years old all of my hair had fell out.

My granddaughter is 10years old and she normally wears her hair in braids with the beads. I hate it when her Mom puts in the fake hair, thankfully that is not often. Once she has had it pressed and once blown dry which looks like it was pressed.

Pet Peeve of mines, I hate hate to see little girls with the fake hair in their head. Some as young as 3 or 4.

I would love to see my granddaughter with locs, however, it is her choice and so far she does not lean in that direction.

my GF cornrows her daughter (3yo) hair and uses fake hair in it sometimes. She says it help the braids keep longer. She doesnt make it much longer than the childs natural hair.

Yeah, that down the back fake hair makes my skin crawl. Just too much IMO for little girls.

I notice that the times that my granddaughter had the fake hair in it lasted longer also, but I say why not wash and cornrow her hair every week. She has really thick hair and I know my DIL finds it a quite a chore to do her hair. I guess it doesnt help that she is tender headed.

when we were little it was a big deal to wear our hair combed into one with a ponytail. everyday wear was combed in 3 or 4.

The Obama girls have their hair blow dried and flat ironed...

I would never put creme in my girls hair until dem ole enough to take care of it on their own...

I got my first relaxer at 13...
