AP: You've been excoriated as &quot;America's Worst Mom&quot; and revered as a parental freedom fighter. Had you anticipated the depth of emotion when you wrote the column about putting your son on the subway?

Skenazy: Nothing prepared me for the response. Not only was the media attention a total shock - so was being judged by strangers. (I'm sorry for anything I ever wrote about you, Madonna!) I don't think I'm a hero, but I sure don't think I'm America's Worst Mom. I'm just trying to raise my kids the way I was raised. People reacted so intensely probably because I was not just pontificating. I actually sent my dear son alone into the bowels of the earth - and if you're not from New York the subway seems a lot scarier than it is.


AP: Why did you decide to turn this controversy into a book?

Skenazy: The weekend after the column exploded I started freerangekids.com to explain that Free-Range parents are not negligent. My God - my kids think I'm a safety nut. We use safety belts, bike helmets, weird little wire toothpicks to help us super-floss. But my husband and I also allow them to get themselves to school and the store, because once you prepare your kids, these things are not unsafe. I wrote the book to say: The fear that has made these activities seem radical is new. It has been foisted upon us by terrifying TV shows, and &quot;experts&quot; with babyproofing services to peddle, and the Kiddie Safety-Industrial Complex that's always coming up with unlikely but awful scenarios so it can sell us stuff to guard against them - like, so help me, &quot;baby knee pads&quot; so your kid doesn't injure her knees learning to crawl.

To any of them who fah heart can manage fi do that more power to them. u si since mi know what mi feel fi carry him come here and what him mean to me mi wont be baxing mi self say if mi did know or if mi did whateva...

When he gets older the leash will be released little by little that by the time he is an adult he can function effectively.

If the kids are in junior high, yes give them freedom but under 10 yrs old?

and like I said, these kids have no 6th sense in them cause they can barely look you in the eye or open them mouths to speak. I just see this an opportunity for some one to take advantage.

I dont have kids but lord I would rather be safe than on the six o'clock news

Chatelaine had one article about a mom who let her 10 yr old walk her friend home after they played at her house. The one time he let her do this on her own, the child was raped and murdered on her way home....this was in a nice neighborhood in Toronto.

etan was 6 when his parents let him walk to the schoolbus/school alone a couple blocks away.

the still live in the soho neighborhood, and like most parents in this situation they kept their same phone # in case he needed to call them

this was the first major case i heard about when mi did fuss come farrin.

body never found so no closure for them.

over the weekend abu was out playing with his friends

he said they were on their bikes near the pool

when a couple got into an argument

and then the boyfriend

slapped the girlfriend

the woman left the pool area and ran toward some nearby shops yelling help with the boyfriend in hot pursuit

my child and his friends followed them

finally the police came - situation cleared

then i hear the story

i told him when people are fighting you need to get away as fast as you can

of course &quot;johnny cochran&quot; wanted me to see it his way - even called my mom for backup (of course she was on my side)

i think cell phones are a false sense of security also

one of the best fundraisers was packaging and reselling school supplies

the PTA would buy in bulk - separate the supplies into individual packages - based on grade - then the students purchased them

it was great - no going to walmart at the last minute - or buying the wrong stuff - and all the kids had the same thing - on day one

plus the school made money on something you needed to buy
