I used to like giving advice and encouragement to questioning parents, since I raised mine without spanking, punishments, or shame. But here there is a near consensus that children need to be controlled, and must be taught obedience and respect, usually with a 'rod.' Everyone seems to believe that children must learn to obey their parents, and that is what their years before school are all about. I see parenting completely differently, and never even went there.

However, my way, the &quot;all-love-all-the-time&quot; technique, gets zero respect in the fora, and so I only reply nowadays when I just can't stop myself. </div></div>

parents or care givers seem to think when they give you licks like my Granmere used to when I was a kid makes you behave and well mannered, WRONG!! if you fear someone mean you detest them.

Also with me just made me step up the vandalism pon her vehicle, chesterfield, carpet up to the day she died she still could not figure what happen to her gas vehicle pon her car I turned 16 and well wont go into details but that was the last lick she gave me

What you say is so true... it reminded me of a conversation I had long ago about what was the effect of giving licks to students in higher grades, that I had in a little Jamaican bar... I still remember because one of the MEN started weeping, and said he quit school because ONE teacher just had it out for him he felt. He just couldnt take the daily fear of humiliation. It still burned in his heart like it was yesterday many years later.
