Re: Aging Parents
((((Tulip)))).....I can relate and it's not easy, both my parents are sickly, but luckily live close to my sisters and I. If we were not around, I don't know how they would cope especially when it comes to their medical necessities. My dad suffers from a condition called Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) where his bone marrow does not produce enough healthy red blood cells. He was diagnosed with MDS back in 2006, but over the years, the disease has progressed as expected and he is now transfusion dependent. We had a scare a couple of months ago after one of the chemo treatments dropped all his blood counts (esp his platelets and white blood cells) and he caught an infection, the attending doctor advised us to make hospice arrangements...
Fortnuately, after a series of antibiotics he recovered from the infection and after several blood and platelet tx his counts increased, albeit still low. His doctors visits are continuous and the various meds have to be kept up with, etc. My mum has severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and osteoperosis and when it acts up, she feels as though she'd rather die than suffer with the pain. I administer the RA medication (Humira) every week via an injectible pen. She has changed so much...my mum was known to be a good laugh...now she has lost her sense of humour and is depressed. She's fallen a few times where her knees have just given way and only paramedics are able to move her as she is too heavy for us to move. She seems to becoming dependent upon pain meds and sleeping pills. Girl, its hard, but the natural cycle of life we all have to deal with a at some point...hang in there...(((Tulip)))
