Schol Visit report Part1

LOL Kia mi know Rich by now. I think im getting using to feeling my soft palms across his face ..that’s all

Rich , I wasn’t going to lie to you …at the time you asked she hadn’t displayed any anxiety but on Friday she as being a little miserable and she made that comment. Anyway so here goes Friday’s meeting...

Meeting scheduled for 9 am with Principal, however, the VP also joined. Started the to lay out the reasons why I was there and began with the bus issues since that was our first nightmare. As I spoke of the incidents, the principal interjected and asked me the name of my child and when I told her the name, she lit up saying “I know that little girl. Yes we have been having some issues…” So clearly she knew exactly what I was talking about. She admitted that they was some major screw up because I had registered her for school early. If anybady know mi, mi is not a last minute person. Mi like to get my tings in order from early so as to avoid problems. But in this case, my being proactive neva pay off cause the registrar did not get Jan enrolled for the bus as she should have. She checked the computer and assured me all was straightened out on that front because her name is now on the roster.

She claims I will not have a problem the next school year because they will “roll over “ the student roster into the next school year.. Ahhhhmmm I don’t know if mi can trust that. I then asked her to provide a place where I can check to see what processes are used to enroll a child on the bus and to ensure continuity. All she had was “take her word for it.” Not so thrilled about that. I said, if there needs to be a write up for something this simple, I can assist the school in designing a process for bus registration. She offered a smile and told me these things are driven from County Admins. To that I say, if something clearly has holes in it, it can be improved and change can come from bottom up. I told her I was quite serious because I engineer processes for a living and it would not be a bother as it may help with a much smoother operation. She then handed me her personal business card and told me to call her directly if I wanted to pursue further. I am thinking, it is YOU who need to contact me, not the other way around. But mi jus leff dat conversation there.

About loosing apparel. This is where the VP sided with me and he too felt that way too many student clothing are left on the playground. He claimed that is where students lose gear the most. Well all he did was to re-iterate the policy that they put them in lost and found…which in my case, none of the apparel lost were sent there, so I said emphatically have your Kindergarten teachers ensure these 4/5 years leave the playground/classroom with their belongings. They are not at that responsible age where that is a priority for them. He agreed. Whether or not that message going to the teachers that remains to be seen.

Bathroom cleanliness was discussed in brief and she said that the custodian have certain times of the day when the bathrooms are to be cleaned, She can’t explain why when I took Jan to the bathroom it was not. Mark you this was at the end of the school day. We were at the orientation that began at 6 pm. According to her, at that time of the day the bathroom should be cleaned for the next day. She took notes to verify that the custodian is following a schedule.

Now the Lunch issue was discussed ad nauseam . … I explained the angst that have had ..including Jan saying she did not get help with her milk the first week and her having snack all week and not getting lunch. She apologized for the confusion and ran through the lunch/cafeteria process with me. I was able to observe the Lunch hour ..so my next report will give you guys a bird's eye few into the Cafeteria experience.

about the bus thing. Yes it is true, the roll the students from the previous year in. In our area it is at the school district level. The bus pass is now online for us (but we used to get a mailing the same week we got our schedule). After the 1st year it was automatic

regarding clothing at Elem school level . mine wear clothes that if them lose it is not a big deal. It happens.... especially with jacket and lunchbox, but usually dem find it back at some point.

someone upthread suggested somehow putting her name and teacher in school jackets...me nuh know what method u would use

Well when u buy wan 2 sweater and a jacket fi last fi di school year or beyond, when shi lose it is it a BIG deal to ME. Who have time or money to keep buying the same ting ova an ova? **kiss teet**

The clothing only have space for one name .. There is no room to add teacher name to it.

Well Kia dear...only ting is yuh live inna wan neda State and mi cyaan use the efficiency of one state to judge the performance of this County. If dem neva register her properly the firs time I am inclined to be wary that they wont be hiccups the next time around (well that's if she stays)

Regarding the name thing.. Someone told me years ago to just put their initials in the jacket because a predator could get hold of the jacket and call dem by name So from then it has been initials. I like the idea ofthe teacher's name (write small) or get the iron on strips where u can write out her initials and the teacher's name

Well she conceded to that ... because she was registered for school that early she should have made the roster on time. So dat made my eyebrow raised. Some ball was dropped

An mi wi cross dat bridge when mi get dere...right now mi a worry bout dis cause mi noh have noh money fi a buy Jacket every week. Is ieda dat or noh sen har wid none an dat is not an option

We have three cheap jackets...wash and alternate...one get lost we wear the other two till the other one makes it home...usually within a week or so.

Anyway after mi an har discuss cafeteria tings mi tell har mi had enough time to observe so I can get a better understanding of what is going on. Kinda educate miself on how dem run that operation.

Ok so Lunch time is at <span style="font-weight: bold">10 AM</span>. I sat in the hallway and watched the kids come down with their teacher. They got to the cafeteria around <span style="font-weight: bold">10:05.</span> I saw the teacher hand them off to two aides. They join a line to get their lunch. By this time it is running close to <span style="font-weight: bold">10:15 </span>ish.

They are just getting settled..




Well, the kids only get 30 mins for lunch so now they are pressing the kids like crazy fi gobble dung dem food. I do not like dat at all. Here they are giving a 2 minute warning like dem a deh a some football game.



These little Kindergarteners do not eat that fast. Most of the time they are talking ..jiggling around and 15 minutes is not enough time for them to eat. They need that entire 30 mins but by the time they sit down 15 minutes gaan.

So my telling Jan to go back and get something if she doesn’t like what she initially got – IS OUT THE DOOR. There is no way she can do that and sit down with enough time to eat. I watched kids throw away food just because they simple don’t have time to finish. We are switching her to packed lunch

They separate lunch pgm kids from those who pack lunch. And even thought they don’t join a line for lunch they are still crunched for time. **sigh** These are the kids who bring lunch on one side




Now the aides do come over and help…here is one of them opening up the milk carton..not sure why Jan had this problem the start of school . But here I am able to see for myself



Another parent was in the cafeteria observing ..don’t know what her issue was but she went and discussed something with the aide




All in all the cafeteria shift is run too tight for my liking… these kids a kill demselves fi gulp dung di food an dem muss suffa fram indigestion at some point.

You guys really noh kow di gravity of the headaches that I am discussing in this thread..believe me. That number on that site rings busy 24/7. Maybe yuh can get trro to dem now dat school already start...try nobadda call dem when yuh a try get an issue resolved. Mi send dem email soh til mi weak! Mi cawl mi cawl soh til mi finga tip dem bun aff fram dialing.

Mi dear ..nat because wan website have contact info mean seh dem a do weh dem suppose to di an mean seh dem pick up phone. Dat has not been my experience wid PG county **aaah sah**
