More foreigners securing jobs in Jamaica

More foreigners are coming to Jamaica to work.
That's according to information contained in the Economic and Social Survey of Jamaica 2005.

It says last year, the Ministry of Labour granted approval for 6,000 persons to work in Jamaica, a 58 percent increase over the figure reported in 2004.

Of the total approvals, 3,300 applications were categorised as new compared to just over 2,000 in the previous year.

The majority of work permits were for persons in the professionals, senior officials and technicians group.

The number of work permits approved in this category increased by 57 percent to 4,750.

Jamaican Goverment, tourism, mining & construction. Mi can bet money pon dat. I think the figures for people becoming citizens annually is also increasing.

Jamaican Goverment, tourism, mining & construction. Mi can bet money pon dat. I think the figures for people becoming citizens annually is also increasing.

Funny that, last week in the Bajan nation I noted that a hotel had put an advert in to state they could not find a Bajan qualified as a cheif Chef and would be recruiting a non local..If there was no reponse in a few days...
That strikes me as a respectable way of doing this, ie placing such an add in the public domain to ensure that all attempts at local recruitment are exhausted,.. Also increase the Newspapers revenue...

Not surprising on the tourism figure, there is a school in the Half Moon Bay shopping plaza that caters to them kids (Heinz - something or odda) them down there in large numbers. Also Digicel and the call centers hiring overseas managers as they try to build up the local talent (at least Digicel tries to train and recruit locally also). Financial Services will be in the same boat at its current growth and the number of qualified Jamaican accountant and auditors are too small to compensate even if a moderate increase in public companies occurs.

And as much as I detest accountants I beleive they are a very nessesary evil... My theory is that had post colonial had more accountants then there would be less easy for corruptions.. Provided that there was a will to procecute!!!!!

Yep I beleive when ever you get hold of a hard copy of the gleaner there seems to be a always requirements for accountants....

Note if they find comericial oil there will be a jobs market for a few hundred oil personnell and these will come from overseas...

A friend of mine also claims there is a severe shortage of project, instrument engineers.. He wanted to set up an agency to alivate this shortage....

so what r the professions alll dem UWI graduates going into...i keep hearing about graduates not able to find jobs...i keep hearing about alllll the locals who r graduating with degrees from offshore schools who have set up in Ja....i keep hearing about everybody who tekking courses upon courses at allllll the facilities in Jamaica...

so how come these vacancies r sooooo many...if yaadie a go foreign fi more money, how come the reverse a tek place , because i refuse to believe people going to ja for a job whose fringe benefit is sunshine year round an beachfront...

that is why i asked the question about who the employers are.

I would not be suprised to find that a large portion fo the permits are being issued for relitively meanial type jobs.

Mi find this from 2003, but we have to bear in mind that since then the Spanish hotels and several other start nuff work plus the Trelawny and Sabina stadium construction and Alcan expansion

how would u define 'menial' in this case and dat would mek mi want to know the ethnic breakdown of the farriners...r we tawking East Indians being brought in for modern day slavery because the long hours they r forced to work etc etc is still at play...the caste system is alive and well u know

menial for whites....now dat is another thing....

as to the Chinese, wellll u see where i am going with this interpretation tyrie

Mi no think dem people deh who bring in dem own [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] even bother fi go through the formal work permit process, is not like seh dem can get any social services right, and how come we need more crafts workers, 400+ a wonder if dem category even right. Nuff crafts people out a Ochi and downton craft market could fill any demand.

back in about 91 when i used to live up north( ontario north) I met a canadian man who told me that he worked on contract in jamaica in the 60's

mi did mek dat observation miself and get kill ova it...people go yaad an see people a mek dem likkle money an braps, dem decide fi go dung deh wid dem tools etc weh dem can get from Hobby Lobby and Michaels and tek di food from di said people whe dem claim fi love....dem ha credit card fi charge di tings from said places but since dem want to live in paradise,is okay fi tek di earnings from di one who ha no choice as to weh dem can live an wat dem can do...
