Is making it cheaper than buying? Nowadays to get a good multi-grain bread it costs like $4.00 which I think is insane. Perhaps I should try baking my own?
Do you think it's cheaper to make it at home rather than buying? what kind of bread do you usually make?

<span style="color: #3333FF">Definitely cheaper to make. A 5lb bag of white flour cost somewhere around $2 and whole wheat is about $2.50. Yeast costs about $1 for a pack but since I've been baking a lot I bought a huge vacuum pack for about $4. Oh yes, and shortening costs about $3 for a big can. That's pretty much it, depending on what kind of bread you're making. I usually add flax seeds or wheat germ or oatmeal or something like that. </span>Comment

Mom's banana bread:
3 ripe bananas - the riper the better
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1-1/2 cups flour
1/4 cup melted butter
1tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla extract
dash of salt
Lots of walnuts (optional)
mash the bananas, add all ingredients, mix well.
pour into buttered loaf pan
sprinkle top with chopped nuts & granulated sugar
bake 1 hr @ 325FComment

Yu can cheapen it furda.. Yu nuh need fi use new yeast every time.....During mi youth days mi mada bake every couple days.. shi save a peice af deh dough like a bun size peice... and re use it deh next day as deh base af deh yeast... .. Wi neva ha now fridgein Jamaica.. suh one small package ah yeast end up lasting a year....Comment

I love banana bread and this recipe looks easy, Mi noh see how mi can mess up this one

Mix the following in a NON METAL BOWL WITH NON METAL UTENSILS!!!!!!!
Mix the yeast and the first 1/2 c water together and let stand until "yeasty". Then sift the dry stuff together, and combine it with the yeast/water and the other 2 c of luke warm water. Mix well with a non-metal spoon and let stand uncovered at room temp for 3-5 days, covering only at night, and stirring 2-3 times a day. Remove 1 cup and start the ten day ritual, as below.
With the remaining mix, add 1/2 c water, 1/2 c flour, and 1 t sugar. Let stand at room temp one day (until very bubbly). Store covered in fridge for up to 10 days for in recipes or as further starter. 10-day ritual (all done at room temp in non-metal bowl)
Day 1--you receive "Herman" and do nothing
Day 2--stir w/non metal (pref. wooden) spoon
Day 3--stir
Day 4--stir
Day 5--add 1 c each of flour, sugar, and milk. Stir
Day 6--stir
Day 7--stir
Day 8--stir
Day 9--stir
Day 10--"Herman is born!" Add 1 c each of flour, sugar, and milk. Stir well. Pour 1 C each into 3 containers. Give to friends/enemies with above instructions. Reserve one cup for reprocessing for yourself.
<span style="text-decoration: underline">Amish Friendship Bread</span>
To Remaining Batch of "Herman" (after you remove the 3 cups and restart or pass them on) add the following. Remaining Herman 2/3 c oil 3 eggs 1 c nut/fruit of choice (applesauce, bananas, etc) 2 c flour 1 1/2 t baking powder 1 c sugar 3/4 salt 1/2 t soda 1 t cinnamon Mix well and bake at 350 45-50 min. Makes 2 loaves.Comment

Amazingly easy Simmi. If there's something at work going on I can whip the batter up in 15 minutes. Pop it in the oven and done.
Be careful with the bananas... too big and the bread needs extra cooking time. Too small = drier bread.
medium size bananas as brown as you can stand to let them get.
