fruit families - inspired by the worst peach

mi read sue thread bout di bad peach and see where peasie allergic to pears and plums. started thinking about fruit families - smaddy at my work place if she allergic to one fruit of the family she allergic to most of them.

in peasie case, it looks like a reaction to fruits of the <span style="font-weight: bold">rose</span> family. but within the fruits she mentioned, there are two strains - <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">prunus </span></span>(peaches, cherries) and <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">pomes</span></span> (pears, apples).

Prunus family of fruits

the main characteristic of prunus is that it carries a kind of <span style="font-weight: bold">cyanide </span>, mainly in its leaves and seeds, from small to large amounts. the more cyanide, the bitter the fruit.

the fruit of the prunus family are <span style="font-weight: bold">drupes </span>- meaning that they have a fleshy outer coating covering a shell (the pit or stone) within which there is a seed. (not all drupes belong to the same family, though. a mango is a drupe but not related to prunus).

Peaches

peaches are apparently popular in the southern united states. dem have <span style="font-weight: bold">clingstone </span>peaches, where the flesh is embedded on the pit, and <span style="font-weight: bold">freestone </span>peaches.



white flesh peaches are more popular over in asia, dem seh, than here in NA. mi see dem in the supermarket but dem look so pale mi ting demma go bland.

peach look like batty. i'm so out of love with them. we had a tree when i was growing up. spwaile mi fi peach. but they are a nasty, evil fruit. never aqgain.

i used o think nectarines were a kind of hybrid of peach and plum. but no, nectarines are just peaches without the fuzz gene.

whipawt u buy dem? try the italian grocers like highland farms, they are more expert, imo, in selecting fruit for sale.

no man a good peach is a wondrous thing.

Apricots

Apricots are a bit of an acquired taste. i like to buy them hard then leave them out at home to soften. when they are hard they are somewhat bittrish, probabably that cyanide thing.

Cherries

Cherries are so dang expensive i keep saying i'm going to buy my own tree. actually i did and it died. the other good thing about cherry trees (or bad, depending on your POV) is that they attract birds.

Plums

Plums are my favourite in the prunus family. they come in so many varieties and colours, and when they are good, they are very very good. i like my plums slightly soft, caw them usually sour or bitter when dem hard.

This is a new kind of plum i tried the other day - juicy and delicious. it's actually called a <span style="font-weight: bold">pluot </span>- meaning its some genetically engineered hybrid of a plum and an apricot.

these speckled red plums are my old time favourites - firm and sweet flesh.



black plums i like because the skin is sour while the flesh is sweet.

Purple prune plums, italian plums - the secret to these i found is not to eat them fresh off the tree - they are quite sour. but u can't leave them too long to ripen cause they get moldy round the seed. nothing worse than a taste of junju when u bite ino a plum that look good from the outside.



these ones are bigger and the flesh greeny yellowier than the usual prune plum. apparently they are also genetically engineered to resist a common plum disease.

Yellow plums are smaller and are a lovely summer treat from farmers' markets here in Ontario.



green plums are okay - i find them more sour than not.
