Gordon Ramsay is thrilled that MasterChef is being compared to American Idol.
“To be honest, it’s exactly that,” the famous TV chef said Monday. “MasterChef in my mind is Chef Idol.”
Of course, Ramsay is known for his sharp tongue, so he was quick with a crack when it was suggested he actually is the Randy Jackson of the MasterChef judging trio, with nice chef Graham Elliot Bowles as the Paula Abdul and icy restauranteur Joe Bastianich as the Simon Cowell.
“I’m Randy Jackson? I’m a 32 (inch) waist, not a 52!” Ramsay protested.
“I’m not Mr. Nasty? Am I getting soft in my old age?”
Well, Ramsay didn’t sound soft when someone asked him a random question about Lindsay Lohan’s prison diet.
“The thing about eating prison food is at least she’s going to lose f---ing weight!” Ramsay said.
But truthfully, it’s Bastianich who is the bad guy on MasterChef, which debuts Tuesday on Fox and CTV and features amateur cooks rather than professionals. First prize is a quarter of a million bucks and a publishing deal for a cookbook.
“I think it’s our way these days to say F.U. to the man, to turn your life around from the drudgery of the job that you hate and the rut that you’re in,” Bastianich said.
“And food - like in the ’60s it might have been Bob Dylan and reefer, now it’s ceviche and risotto. It’s a way of turning your personal passion and who you are into a reality.
“They (the contestants) see MasterChef as a way of liberation, freeing themselves of the monotony and grind and everything that they hate about their lives. If you really love food, if you’re a talented cook, if you can give to others in that way, to not ever give it a shot is probably the saddest thing that could ever happen to anybody.”
If you’ve seen American Idol, you already have a pretty good idea how MasterChef - which is a successful franchise in other countries - is structured.
And Bowles, by the way, isn’t alarmed by being dubbed the Paula of the bunch.
“I used to be a big Paula Abdul fan back in the late ’80s, so I think it’s great,” Bowles said.
“People are going to make whatever comparisons they want. At the end of the day, I don’t go into judging anybody or any competition or contestant with that in mind, ‘Oh, I have to be the Paula, I have to be overly nice.’
“That just, for the most part, is who I am. I think I’m a pretty nice guy.”
Bastianich? Not so much.
And you’d think he would hold back a little because these people are amateurs, after all.
“If this was Joe being nice because they’re amateurs, I’d hate to see him on Top Chef or some other type of show,” Bowles said.
Added Bastianich, “At the end of the day, it’s nice to be nice, but garbage is garbage and great food is great food.”
Not if you’re a raccoon.

Yes I saw it and plan to follow the series...
so far I thought it was kinda predictable in terms of the format... they don;t seem to waste as much time on frivolities dowe.
I'll watch anything that has to do wid cooking or food so it's all good!
My man is a bit ova de top wid im nastiniss - like im ah try too hard fe cultivate dat image... Gordon will always be my boy!

Den Ramsay empty de whola de sitn pon de table. I can ongle imagine how the BTS worka dem whenna cus some breed a badwod when dem si dat, knowing say a dem haffi go clean it up...

Yes de french bway was amusing to - mi did ah wonda how meeda get joke offa cooking wen dem day de supm is like American Idol I was thinking yeah but without the jokes of the first auditions but not to worry - I was highly amused

Mi did actually feel sorry fi im, cause im nah wok an when im hear bout de $250,000 prize money im yeye dem start shine like new moon...
Funny enough, one likkle town near me had a soup contest an dat was de winning soup: beer and cheddar...
